The Pest Program conducts surveys, diagnostics and control activities for pests and diseases of important agricultural commodities throughout Washington State. Pest Program employees conduct surveys for Northern giant hornet, Japanese beetle, spongy moth, apple maggot, Phytophthora ramorum, Spartina and other invasive insect pests, diseases, and noxious weeds. Some employees work in the Plant Pest and Molecular Diagnostics Lab, or the Entomology labs in Olympia or Yakima to provide diagnostics of survey samples. Others assist with control and eradication efforts for Northern, giant hornet, Japanese beetle, spongy moth, invasive snails, Spartina and knotweed. Regardless of the threat, Pest program employees use cutting edge technology, scientific processes, and teamwork to protect some of Washington's most valuable agricultural crops.
The Opportunity
The Pest Survey & Eradication Field Supervisor is responsible for conducting multiple survey and eradication protocols for various insect pests of concern. In support of the Pest Programs mission, this position assists with executing field operations and providing oversight and guidance to assigned Agricultural Aids to accomplish the goals of the assigned insect detection and control projects.
Duration
The pest survey field supervisor position is a temporary position that is expected to last five - six months and begin mid-May depending on geographical location. Field supervisors typically work full time Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch.
This field based position is approved for a home duty station located in King County, WA. These positions are represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees
Include but are not limited to:
Act as a Field Supervisor conducting field operations for Japanese Beetle and other invasive species survey and eradication projects.
- Participate in the detection, delimitation and eradication of designated nonnative survey targets via the deployment and routine inspection of traps.
- Maintain familiarity with various trapping techniques and data collection protocols which are subject to potential changes throughout the season.
- Conduct visual detection surveys for signs and symptoms of designated survey targets.
- Provide overall daily team support, one-on-one guidance to direct reports, and approve daily work hours and leave requests.
- Provide guidance to Agricultural Aides regarding survey target information trapping operations and data collection.
- Identify, report, and submit suspect survey targets for confirmation.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders and property owners to obtain permission to conduct survey activities and distribute pest information.
- Use assigned technology to record daily survey work, including navigation between sites and effective route planning.
- Submit daily timekeeping into Pisces.
Professionals with:
- A bachelors degree in entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, botany, agronomy, or closely allied field
- Equivalent education/experience.
- Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid driver’s license to travel on agency business prior to employment.
- Must be able to acquire a CPR/First Aid certification prior to the start of the active survey season.
- Two (2) years college-level education involving entomology, biology, ecology, agricultural science, or similar field.
- Six (6) months experience conducting scientific field work and data collection.
- Six (6) months team leadership experience.
