The Opportunity
WSDOT North Central Region is currently seeking an experienced professional to serve as the Region Assistant Traffic Engineer in Wenatchee, WA. As the Region Assistant Traffic Engineer, the successful candidate will provide leadership to the Traffic Design and Operations office as well as providing guidance to Traffic Maintenance crews. The goal of the Traffic Office is to keep traffic flowing reliably and safely and is accomplished by maintaining state-of-the-art knowledge in traffic design, traffic operations and traffic regulations. This position leads others in the design, implementation, traffic modeling, construction, monitoring, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices including roadway delineation, signs, signals, ITS devices and illumination. The Assistant Traffic Engineer position also provides traffic design and work zone traffic control guidance to area maintenance crews and other region organizations (planning, utilities, program management, local programs, and project offices). What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Region Assistant Traffic Engineer will:
- Serve as an assistant to the Region Maintenance/Traffic Engineer assuming appropriate responsibility in their absence.
- Collaborate in decisions related to safety of the traveling public in traffic engineering matters.
- Represent the Region in meetings with community groups and other state and federal agencies to interpret and explain policy and procedures and to resolve traffic questions/concerns.
- Maintain state of the art knowledge in traffic design, operations, traffic modeling, and regulations.
- Manage design of traffic items including signing, signals, illumination, ITS, pavement markings and delineation.
- Approve work zone traffic control plans, and stamp engineering plans developed by the traffic office.
- Provide day-to-day management of all projects assigned to the traffic office.
- Manage ongoing operations reviews which can include collision analysis, traffic modeling, sight distance measurements, ball banking, signal timing and coordination, illumination, day/night sign and pavement marking retro reflectivity, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Responsible for assessment, response, and documentation of public and local jurisdiction concerns and complaints relating to traffic safety.
- Oversee the field assessment operations for the region and the identification and development of low-cost enhancement projects.
- Coordinate with and provide traffic operation guidance to the Traffic Signals/Electrical/ITS, Incident Response, and Striping maintenance offices.
- Serve on interdisciplinary teams addressing future transportation needs, regional transportation plans and private development traffic impacts.
- Lead and assist in the selection and development of traffic office personnel.
- Appointee in this position is expected to consider personal, co-worker and public safety as first and foremost objectives during the planning and performance of all activities in connection with work assignments.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field. Related engineering experience may substitute for education.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Ability to delegate effectively, make major decisions, communicate effectively.
- Work effectively with stakeholders both inside and outside of the Department.
Expert knowledge of:
- Principles of traffic engineering and traffic engineering computer programs; highway design standards and WSDOT design and plans preparation processes.
- Agency goals and objectives.
- Maintenance accountability process; traffic maintenance methods; performance measures for operations and maintenance; environmental laws, regulations, and issues; contract administration.
- Principles of personnel administration; labor union bargaining agreements; department programming and budgeting procedures; strategic planning; workforce diversity values; employee safety guidelines; contract law; state and local political issues.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- A master’s degree in civil engineering with a specialty in Traffic Engineering is desired.
