The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for an IT Security Engineer to join our team and play a critical role in securing the future of our statewide field systems and operational technology! We're looking for a cybersecurity expert with a passion for solving complex challenges, and someone ready to protect and defend our systems that help deliver public safety across the state.
In this high-impact position, you will analyze and mitigate risks for mission-critical systems that keep our operations running smoothly, for business units like wildfire, radio, GIS, geology, and regional offices. From designing secure network architectures to documenting innovative cybersecurity solutions, you’ll be at the forefront of protecting vital computing and telecommunications infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to the safety of our teams on the ground by ensuring that systems are secure before they are deployed.
You’ll collaborate with a dedicated team to shape the future of cybersecurity at DNR, architecting robust solutions for authentication, authorization, identity management, risk mitigation, and compliance. What You’ll Do:
- Analyze, identify, and mitigate risks for complex, critical systems across the state
- Design secure and strong IT system structures, authentication and authorization controls, and identity management
- Collaborate with teams to document cybersecurity solutions and ensure future scalability
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and mitigate cybersecurity risks before system deployment
- Innovate and create best practices for securing vital technologies that support resident safety
- Serve as the primary security liaison for regions, Wildfire, radio, and other state-wide field workers, ensuring systems are secure, functional, and user-accessible
- Facilitate vulnerability assessment and remediation efforts to ensure timely patching and mitigation of software and hardware vulnerabilities for information technology systems, specifically those that support fieldwork across the state
- Design and implement cross-functional security measures in collaboration with others across the state
- Oversee and analyze security events using advanced endpoint detection and response tools
- Engage with end-users for cybersecurity training and promote a security-aware culture
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology or closely related field AND seven years of relevant IT security experience
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant IT experience. - Experience with at least 4 of the following security domains:
- Security and Risk Management
- Asset Security
- Security Architecture and Engineering
- Communication and Network Security
- Identity and Access Management
- Security Assessment and Testing
- Security Operations
- Software Development Security
- Enterprise server management experience.
- Knowledge of IT security best practices.
- Experience integrating cybersecurity technologies with existing technologies.
- Experience with security engineering.
- Ability to analyze, design, and implement security policies and procedures.

- Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

- Must pass fingerprint and background checks due to exposure to law enforcement and sensitive data.
- This position works in an office setting, with the option for hybrid telework workstation options, and must travel to locations across the state for fieldwork to meet the business needs of Wildfire and region units with variable travel times depending on workload throughout the year.
- Expected to travel throughout the state as needed, at most 50% of the time.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Security-related certifications, e.g., CompTIA Security , GIAC Security Essentials, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and Certified Information Security Auditor (CISA).
- Experience with securing cloud technologies such as Google Cloud, Azure, and AWS.
