The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity in DNR’s Forest Resilience Service Forestry Program within Olympic Region. The Forest Resilience Division is responsible for the assessment, planning, coordination and implementation, and monitoring of forest health related activities across all-lands that work to restore and sustain ecological functions of Washington’s forested landscapes and support healthy and resilient communities. The Service Forestry Program is an integral part of the team through the direct delivery of technical assistance and educational services supporting proactive management of Washington’s non-industrial forests including private, municipal, county, and non-governmental organization owned forest land.
Washington’s Service Forestry Program provides land management advice to forest landowners and helps to assess resource conditions and forest health, identify potential problems and opportunities, determine cost-share eligibility, assist with treatment implementation, and recommend management practices to help achieve objectives. The program educates landowners and assists with development and implementation of management plans to guide current and future management actions.
The Olympic Service Forestry Specialist supports the mission, principles and goals of DNR by directly serving the public through the delivery of technical assistance and services to landowners and communities in Clallam, Jefferson, and northwest Grays Harbor counties. Service Forestry Specialists occupy an important role as a community’s link to DNR and are often the face of the agency for forest landowners. Specifically, these specialists provide technical assistance about forest health, forest management, watershed protection, insect and disease control, forest recreation, tree planting, wildlife habitat development, and fuels reduction or mitigation to small forest landowners. They may also provide information about, as well as help implement, financial assistance programs.Responsibilities:
- Delivering technical expertise to forest landowners and forestry service providers regarding forest management and wildfire risk reduction alternatives.
- Providing technical specifications for forest management practices while incorporating landowner objectives into management recommendations.
- Facilitating landowner participation in financial assistance programs and forest health or fuels reduction contracts.
- Building a strong and positive rapport with private landowners, WSU Extension, Conservation Districts, Firewise USA communities, forest collaboratives, coalitions, local schools, and the general public.
- Collaborating with other foresters, fire management specialists, wildlife biologists, Forest Regulation staff, Fire Managers, Small Forest Landowner technical advisors, and interagency partners.
- Making recommendations for appropriate practices to reduce wildland fire potential and enhance forest health on stands of timber near dwellings, high public use areas, and on forested properties.
- Using GIS technologies to collect and/or analyze data.
- One year of professional forestry experience.
- Experience in general forest management activities such as forest road design and construction, timber management planning, silviculture techniques, reforestation methods, and timber harvest boundaries.
- Experience using forestry tools such as measuring and hand tools.
- Proficient with computers, Microsoft Office applications, and SharePoint.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Collector, and other mapping tools to document work and convey information to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently.
- Time management skills.
- Skills in oral and written communications and can convey messages clearly and persuasively. Excellent public speaking skills.
- Organizational management skills with a strong understanding and ability to organize efficiently and the ability to develop or use systems for tracking implementation and accomplishments of several complex projects.

- Valid Public Pest Consultant certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Most of the work is performed alone in sometimes isolated, unimproved areas and on forest or rangeland but may include office, field, and classroom settings. Ability to walk over steep, uneven terrain in a variety of forest environments, year-round, statewide in a variety of weather conditions is required.
- Occasional overnight statewide travel is required to provide services. The ability to drive long distances in a variety of weather conditions, year-round, is required.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- A bachelor's degree in Forest Management or a related field.
- Working knowledge of silviculture and forest management practices in the pacific northwest or similar environment.
- Experience teaching or providing group presentations.
- Experience working in a positive, responsive, cooperative, collaborative manner with the public and other professionals (both inter-organizational and interdisciplinary).
- Experience with government procurement rules, contracting, and administration.
- Experience providing technical assistance, education, and educational materials to non-professional audiences, especially forest landowners.
- Current knowledge of Forest Practices rules; Forest Practices Board Manual guidance; and DNR Forest Practices policies, procedures, and practices.
- Previous experience working with small forest landowners.
- Valid Certified Tree Farm Inspector certification.
