Who We Are
In response to deaths resulting from encounters with law enforcement and the community’s demand for change, the Washington State Legislature created a new, first-of-its-kind agency : the Office of Independent Investigations (OII). This new agency was formed in 2021 and operates under the requirements of the law in which investigations involving the use of deadly force must be truly independent of the involved law enforcement agency.
Our mission is to conduct fair, thorough, transparent, and competent investigations of incidents involving use of deadly force. This approach is intended to remove conflicts of interest, improve accountability and transparency, and renew the public’s confidence. Through these efforts, we hope to strengthen the relationships between police and the community, build public trust, and promote effective policing. To help us carry out this mission, we are looking for folks of all levels to join our growing team.
As a Video Technician on our team, you will be pivotal in upholding the integrity and standards of OII by expertly preparing and managing video evidence. Your role includes assisting with public disclosure requests, providing on-scene support to the Investigative Division, and video production and editing. Daily tasks will center around the collection, management, and distribution of video evidence, ensuring accuracy and compliance at every step.
Due to the nature of these positions, OII conducts a pre-employment background investigation prior to hire. Background investigations include a psychological evaluation, fingerprinting, and a polygraph.
Location : This position is hybrid with opportunities for remote work.
What You’ll Do
The Video Technician will advise on policies and protocols for video management, evidence collection, and storage, ensuring that investigative staff are properly trained in these areas. In addition to maintaining training and certifications necessary to uphold credibility, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to :
Forensics :
- Collect video evidence from DVRs and other devices at scenes and follow-up locations.
- Follow and stay up to date on best practices for handling video evidence and processing files.
- Write supplemental reports and testify in court when needed.
- Complete public disclosure requests and prepare videos for release.
- Use Axon platform to create and share video evidence.
- Edit videos for redactions, narrative releases, and presentations.
- Apply equity and social justice principles while performing job duties.
