The Workforce Pathways Program, part of the Office of Public Affairs & Equity, is dedicated to creating equitable access to public health careers. We provide paid professional experience and learning opportunities for individuals historically excluded from public health. Our work ensures the public health workforce reflects Washington's diverse communities.
As a Workforce Pathways Professional within the Office of Infectious Disease (OID), you’ll contribute to resource development, capacity building, and culturally appropriate service delivery. You will support key initiatives like the implementation of Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards, community engagement, and programs that improve the health of people who use drugs. Your work will help create inclusive public health solutions that benefit communities statewide.
Key Responsibilities Include:
CLAS Standards Implementation:
- Work with the Language Equity Group to help OID programs achieve compliance with CLAS Standards and Plain Language guidelines.
- Conduct literature reviews on Plain Language, CLAS Standards, and Language Access to inform internal processes.
- Support consultants in developing training materials and resources for staff and partners.
- Develop communication protocols to emphasize the importance of equity-based service delivery.
Washington Syndemic Planning Group (WSPG) Support:
- Assist the WSPG consultant with coordination, engagement, and assessment of group activities.
- Maintain accurate records of WSPG meetings and member eligibility for stipends.
- Collaborate with WSPG members and the Office of Public Affairs & Equity to develop and update a webpage with resources and archived materials.
- Support planning and facilitation of WSPG’s annual in-person convening, including technical support and post-event assessments.
Resource Development and Capacity Building:
- Conduct surveys with syringe service programs to identify capacity-building and training needs.
- Reach out to Overdose Education & Naloxone Distribution partners to assess barriers and provide support for reengagement.
- Update directories such as the syringe service programs directory and naloxone finder directory.
Program Documentation and Presentations:
- Document project objectives, deliverables, and Workforce Pathways cohort activities.
- Develop mid-point and final presentations to showcase project progress and outcomes.
- Coordinate and lead presentation meetings with Workforce Pathways staff and host supervisors.
Program Improvement Recommendations:
- Collaborate with Workforce Pathways staff to evaluate program activities.
- Represent the Workforce Pathways Program at meetings, conferences, and other collaborative events.
- Support grant reporting by summarizing relevant activities and outcomes.
This is a term-limited project position funded by the Workforce Pathways Program through the CDC Public Health Infrastructure Grant, funded through May 31, 2026. This position is not eligible for retirement benefits.
Location and Flexibility
This position is remote and open to applicants living anywhere in Washington State, as well as those near the Oregon/Washington or Idaho/Washington borders. We prioritize work-life balance. This is a home-based position with some opportunities for in-person collaboration. While attending events or working in the office may happen occasionally, they will be scheduled in advance and attendance will be optional.
Required Qualifications
You must meet ONE of the options provided and the additional criteria listed. Experience may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.
Option 1: Five (5) years of volunteer or professional experience in public health, health services, community outreach, or community engagement.
Option 2: A bachelor’s degree or higher from a college or university (from within the U.S. or international) in public health, community health, nursing, health care administration, social work, health communications, public administration, business administration, or a related field; AND three (3) years of volunteer or professional experience in public health, health services, community outreach, or community engagement.
AND
One of the following:
- Experience (paid or unpaid) as a community health worker, community navigator, or natural helper; or
- Received formal education and/or training (US or international) in public health, health care, health services, nursing, medicine or an allied field; or
- Experience (paid or unpaid) supporting people or groups impacted by HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis, and/or substance use and underserved by the public health system, including but not limited to, communities of color, people with disabilities, immigrant and refugee community members, and people impacted by incarceration.
AND
- Experience and commitment to community engagement, partnership building, collaboration, and equity.
- Experience and commitment to ensuring services and information are accessible for individuals with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency.
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse partners including individuals, families, culturally specific and community-based groups, volunteer boards, policy committees, service providers, government and systems partners, or co-workers.
- Experience and knowledge of population health issues on a local, state, and/or national level impacting communities of color, people with disabilities, and immigrant and refugee community members.
- Commitment to serving the public, particularly underserved and under resourced communities and advancing the intersection of equity and racial justice in public health.
- Ability to adapt to changing business needs, conditions, and work responsibilities to achieve successful solutions and results in dynamic situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience supporting community health efforts.
- Planning health programs and projects including experience with assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
- Proficiency in language other than English (Spanish preferred).
- Experience implementing infectious disease, harm reduction, health equity, and/or social determinants of health focused policies, programs, or initiatives; working in community organizations.
- New to U.S. governmental public health service but interested and committed to gaining experience within the governmental public health system.
