The DOJ is looking for highly motivated and talented individuals to join our Division of Legal Services as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Unit. This posting may be used to fill multiple vacancies, and may be used to fill vacancies in the next six months.

This position is headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street in Madison.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of an Assistant Attorney General Supervisor, this position provides a variety of legal services, through counsel and representation, to the Legislature, Governor, state agencies, corporation counsel and district attorneys.

The Civil Litigation Unit handles a wide variety of matters and litigation on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, its agencies, the University of Wisconsin System, and individual state employees. The unit serves as defense counsel in a number of practice areas including the following : civil rights, prisoner litigation, workers compensation, eminent domain, medical malpractice, personal injury, public records, employment, and administrative law. Attorneys work collaboratively with paralegals, support staff, other Assistant Attorneys General, and clients.

Salary Information

The Assistant Attorney General position is in pay schedule 09 and pay range 75. The starting pay will be between $36.72 - $56.37 / hour (approx. $76,377 - $117,249 annually). Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Job Details

This position may be eligible to work remotely up to 95% as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period, reporting to the headquarters in Madison, including reporting on multiple consecutive workdays if needed. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.

High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

Occasional in-state travel will be required. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.

The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.

Special Qualification : Candidate must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin State Bar upon appointment.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must have education, training and / or experience in the following :

  • Conducting in-depth legal research
  • Analyzing statutes and case law
  • Writing judicial decisions or briefs as the primary drafter
  • Oral advocacy in any court or legal presentation experience

In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have education, training, and / or experience in the following :

  • One or more of the following areas of law : employment, public records, civil rights, prisoner litigation, workers compensation, eminent domain, medical malpractice, personal injury, or administrative
  • Working in a clerkship or for a court at the appellate or federal level
  • Serving as counsel in complex litigation in state or federal trial court
  • Working with discovery and pre-trial tasks to include some of the following : document review, written discovery, conducting depositions, and witness preparation.
  • Drafting summary judgment and other merits filings.
  • Serving as lead counsel in jury or bench trials.
