Position Summary

The Capitol Police Officer position performs all security and law enforcement functions on the assigned shift at DOA owned and leased facilities. This position provides law enforcement services to the citizens of the State of Wisconsin. This position determines appropriate law enforcement actions to be taken; applying and interpreting State of Wisconsin and Federal statutes; working with people from diverse backgrounds; recording and preserving evidence, enforcing parking statutes; providing first aid including CPR, and conducting beat patrols.

Salary Information

Starting hourly rate for the Police Officer position (schedule / range 36-63) will be $29.58 per hour - $42.84 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan. A 24-month probationary period is required.

Positions filled as a bilingual officer (Spanish / English) may be eligible for an up to $1.00 per hour bilingual add-on.

Candidates who are new to state service or who have not held any permanent position with the state within the last five years and are willing to commit to working at the Department of Administration, Division of Capitol Police, for at least one year may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $2,000 !

Job Details

Candidates must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License with a good driving record. The selected candidate must successfully pass a drug screening, psychological evaluation, medical examination, vision screening, and fitness exam. This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, days, nights or swing shifts. Must also have the ability to be on call. A criminal background check will be conducted prior to selection. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form. DOA does not sponsor work visas.

These Capitol Police Officer positions may also be filled as a bilingual police officer. If you are bilingual in Spanish and English, be sure to click the "Add Language Skills" button in the Qualifications>

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will currently be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB), or eligible for certification within 30 days of application, or currently enrolled in a 720-hour Law Enforcement Academy.

  • Certification as a jail or correctional officer by the Law Enforcement Standards Board does NOT qualify.
  • In addition, a qualified applicant for a bilingual officer position will have the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in Spanish in addition to English.
