In partnership with individuals and organizations; DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring up to four ( LTE (Limited Term Employee) - Forestry Technician-Adv at our Rhinelander Service Center in Rhinelander, WI.

These positions will require frequent travel throughout the state with occasional overnight stays. The positions are expected to begin in spring, but actual start dates are negotiable. Preferred start date range is March 10 - April 30, but are negotiable.

Position Summary

These positions will work on a wide variety of forestry projects within the Division of Forestry, Forest Ecology and Economics section. Current projects are diverse and highly collaborative, focusing on research and application of science to forest ecology and management, which will provide the successful applicant many opportunities to grow and develop a varied skillset. Research within the section could include but is not limited to : a forest assisted migration study that includes study establishment via planting and initial data collections, a study of deer impacts on forest regeneration, and a study to understand the efficacy of treatments to limit invasive species establishment in recently disturbed forests. Work could include forest assessments, tree and plant species identification, study plot establishment, deer browse assessments, and tree seed collection. The successful applicants should have experience in forestry and / or field research, be in good physical condition, and on a daily basis be able to hike while carrying gear in a variety of conditions. There are four positions available, based at the Wisconsin DNR Forestry Headquarters in Rhinelander. These positions will require frequent travel throughout the state with occasional overnight stays. Incumbents of this position are required to meet and maintain eligibility to drive a state vehicle.

  • Forest understory and overstory assessments
  • Long term project infrastructure maintenance

10% Administrative tasks

  • Salary Information

    This position pays between $21.00-22.00 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 06-14 under the Forestry Technician Advanced classification. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

    Job Details

    This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

    4) Allow individuals to hold multiple LTE appointments concurrently. If both LTE positions are at the same agency, the positions must be bona fide different positions. Each individual LTE position allows for maximum of 1039 hours in a twelve-month period.

    Special Requirements :

    1) Residency : To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

    A Wisconsin resident is a person who :

  • a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;
  • b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;
  • c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or

    d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c)." s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

    2) Background Checks : The Department of Natural Resources conducts criminal background checks on final applicants prior to a job offer.     3) Eligible to work in U.S. : Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility I-9 form upon hire.

    Qualifications

    In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria :

  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and / or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI / DUI violations within the past year
  • Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Ability to physically navigate uneven terrain while carrying up to 40 pounds of gear and in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Education and / or experience in Wisconsin tree and shrub identification
  • Experience in field forestry and / or field research
  • Ability to navigate using a GPS, map, and compass
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word)
  • Experience with data entry and QA / QC
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with chain saw use
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
