Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Site Director, this position independently coordinates the entire maintenance operation of the entire historic site and property, including the maintenance of all historic and modern structures. The employee performs a wide range of semiskilled tasks including repair work requiring the manual use of tools. The position performs routine preventative maintenance, and makes minor repairs to HVAC systems, water heaters, dehumidifiers, filters/pumps and all other mechanicals on the property. Job duties include inspecting, maintaining and repair of specialized equipment and climate-controlled environments for state collections. This position is also responsible for the inspection, testing and maintenance of all fire and security systems, including fire extinguishers, hoses and any specialized equipment. carpentry and grounds keeping, as well as some mechanical and custodial tasks. This individual also performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance to mechanical, plumbing and HVAC systems.
Year-round position, (Schedule include weekdays and some weekends, holidays and evenings) Average 25 hours per week during the season (April – October) and 10 to 15 hours per week in off season (November – March).
Salary Information
Pay is $20.00 per hour with a weekend differential of 80 cents per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 03-12.
Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.
Job Details
A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 25 hours per week during the season and 10 - 15 hours per week during the off season.
Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.
Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.
WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.
Qualifications
- Able to lift/carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Be familiar with and able to safely use common carpentry and grounds keeping tools, as well as custodial supplies, equipment and chemicals.
- Must be able to self-start each morning and be able to perform all duties in a swift and thorough manner to make sure the museum is clean, safe and inviting for staff and guests.
- Be able to take direction and follow through with minimum supervision
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and safe driving record
- Be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and under hot, cold, wet or dusty conditions.
- Ability to direct, motivate and coordinate the work of others.
- Basic knowledge of accepted procedures and techniques in electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting trades.

- Knowledge of grounds keeping practices and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of security systems and procedures
