The Wisconsin DNR is hiring up to three LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Recreation Operations Technicians in Wautoma, Waupaca, and Sherwood, WI.

Position Summary


The Recreation Management Team is a traveling property development and maintenance crew member that covers WDNR properties across several counties. The work focus is on boat access sites, Fishery and Wildlife Areas, Streambank Protection Areas, and State Natural Areas as well as assisting in State Parks, Forests, and Trails as needed. These positions work predominantly independently however, group work will occur.

The Recreation Operation Technician is responsible for a combination of general maintenance and repair work, outdoor maintenance, and groundskeeping work. Recreation Operation Technicians often operate machinery such as UTV's, skid steers, chainsaws, hand tools, power tools, mowers, equipment transport, and other motorized vehicles.

50% - Perform maintenance of facilities and grounds to ensure they conform to established standards, mow and trim grass, signage installation, pick up litter, clean public use areas, remove trees and brush, Kiosk construction and/or repair, mitigating and resolving potential safety concerns, parking area, and road and trail surface repair.

20% - Manage properties and their facilities to protect public health and safety. Conduct building and designated use inspections.

15% - Operate and maintain equipment such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, power tools, sprayers, etc.

15% - Fill and grade park roads, patch blacktop, and maintain culverts and shoulders.

Salary Information


This position pays between $16.00 - $19.00 per hour and is in the Facilities Repair Worker classification in pay schedule range 03-10. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

4) Allow individuals to hold multiple LTE appointments concurrently. If both LTE positions are at the same agency, the positions must be bona fide different positions. Each individual LTE position allows for maximum of 1039 hours in a twelve-month period.

Special Requirements:

1) Residency: To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin resident is a person who:

a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;

b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;

c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or

d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c).” s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

2) Background Checks: The Department of Natural Resources conducts criminal background checks on final applicants prior to a job offer. Qualifications


In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year


Required Qualifications for Recreation Management Team Members:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public
  • Candidates must think creatively and use problem solving skills
  • Knowledge, skills and experience of equipment maintenance operation
  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual
