The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Wildlife Technician Advanced at our offices, in Alma and La Crosse, WI.

Position Summary


Wildlife Technician Advanced - Alma, WI

This position is responsible for a broad range of technical paraprofessional support for the wildlife management program. Work duties include leading implementation of priority habitat management activities, implementing biological surveys, maintaining internal databases, and providing timely customer service. This position will work under the general supervision of the Eau Claire Area Wildlife Supervisor and will work closely with and report directly to the FTE Wildlife Biologist stationed in Alma.


60% Lead implementation of priority habitat management activities. Includes but is not limited to: leading field crews, operation of equipment, managing water control structures and supporting infrastructure, application of herbicide, and participation in prescribed fire operations.


10% Implement biological surveys and waterfowl or dove banding operations. May include, but is not limited to: waterfowl, otter, large carnivore, upland bird brood, summer deer, woodcock, ruffed grouse, and crane survey data collection and entry.


10% Maintain internal databases associated with land and wildlife management activities. Including, but not limited to: reconnaissance updates, documentation for completed treatments, and other data entry for infrastructure and resource management.


10% Provide timely customer service. Includes, but is not limited to: responding to nuisance and injured animal concerns, providing general information about recreational opportunities, and directing customers to program specialists as appropriate.


10% Other paraprofessional or technical duties that support the Wildlife Management program, as assigned.


Wildlife Technician Advanced - La Crosse, WI

This position will serve as a wildlife technician (advanced) for the Bureau of Wildlife Management and will be stationed at the La Crosse DNR Service Center. The position will report to the Black River Falls wildlife supervisor and be a member of the Black River Falls area wildlife management team. This position will lead or assist with habitat and property management duties, conduct a wide range of wildlife surveys ranging from waterfowl banding to elk capture, assist with chronic-wasting disease surveillance efforts and perform general administrative tasks.


40% Design and implement wetland, forest, barrens and grassland habitat management including project planning, consultation, coordination of staff and/or contractors, funding requests and implementation of project treatments. Treatments may include brush mowing, forest opening establishment and maintenance, timber stand improvement, firebreak establishment, herbicide application, habitat planting, water level management and wetland infrastructure maintenance.


25% Conduct wildlife surveys (waterfowl banding, carnivore tracking, otter, grouse, woodcock, etc), respond to nuisance/injured wildlife reports, assist with wildlife outreach and education efforts, coordinate CWD sampling efforts, and collect wildlife diseases samples.


20% Operate and maintain equipment including chainsaws, brushsaws, tractors, brush mowers, herbicide sprayers and UTVs/ATVs to perform habitat and property management activities.


10% Perform general management and maintenance of wildlife management properties including establishing boundary lines and posting, maintaining public access sites, creating and maintaining property identification signage and addressing other property management needs.


5% Conduct administrative tasks such as wildlife survey reports, accomplishment reports, vehicle logs, expense reports, training and other needs as assigned.

Salary Information


These positions pay between $16.00 - $20.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 06-14. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

4) Allow individuals to hold multiple LTE appointments concurrently. If both LTE positions are at the same agency, the positions must be bona fide different positions. Each individual LTE position allows for maximum of 1039 hours in a twelve-month period.

Qualifications


In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidates must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year


Minimally qualified candidates for the position in
Alma, WI will have:

  • Ability to work irregular shifts including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to carry 50 lbs


Well-qualified candidates for the position in
Alma, WI will have:

  • Knowledge or experience in wildlife management or a related field
  • Experience with equipment and facility maintenance
  • Experience operating equipment relevant to the position's duties (ex. agricultural tractor, chainsaw, ATV/UTV)
  • Certification and experience with prescribed burning


Minimally qualified candidates for the position in
La Crosse, WI will have:

  • Knowledge and experience related to wildlife ecology and habitat management.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment.
  • Possess ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and public.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Experience operating farm equipment, boats and other equipment relevant to the position's duties (ex. agricultural tractor, chainsaw, ATV/UTV)

La Crosse, WI will have:
