Introduction


The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute. DSPS and related professional boards protect the citizens of Wisconsin by ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals; performing inspections of commercial buildings, amusement rides, boilers, elevators, pressurized gas systems, and electrical systems; and performing plan reviews of commercial building, plumbing, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, and private onsite wastewater treatments systems.

Where We Are Located: This position will be a mobile resource working out of their home location and traveling to jobs/inspections within their assigned areas. The position may service Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine, Washington, Kenosha, Walworth, and Rock counties. All employees are expected to be headquartered and work within the State of Wisconsin. It is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin will be approved.

Position Summary


The Occupational Safety Inspector 1 is responsible for conducting inspections of amusement rides, ski lifts, ski tows, tattoo establishments, body art establishments, mines, pits, quarries, and places of public employment to enforce relevant provisions. This position is also responsible for assisting with complaint investigations related to tattoo and body piercing establishments; assisting in the review and recommending approval or denial of variance requests made by operators; and evaluating the licensing, investigation, and inspection practices of local health agents under contract with the department to inspect tattoo and body piercing establishments. Other duties include:

  • Conduct investigations of reported job-related injuries.
  • Confer with owners, employers, employees, and administrators to explain and interpret code requirements.
  • Research, review and study current OSHA and job safety requirements.
  • Prepare required written inspection and compliance reports.

Salary Information


This position is in schedule-range (05-64) with an annual salary of $45,760 - $62,400, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process. For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications


Qualified applicants will have experience with all the following:

  • Training or experience in applying OSHA standards.
  • Experience assisting internal and external customers with technical questions.
  • Training or experience writing technical reports (i.e. progress reports, training reports, etc.)

In addition to having all the above, well qualified applicants will have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Training or experience in a safety related field.
  • Training or experience conducting enforcement inspections/audits.
  • Experience researching Administrative Codes or Statutes
  • Experience developing and presenting training programs.
  • Experience conducting complaint investigations.
