Duties : The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Director, Transitions & Family Programs in our Center for Student Engagement. This is a full-time 12-month role. The Center for Student Engagement provides services including orientation and transition programs, leadership development and student activities, fraternity and sorority support, student union building operations, and community and civic engagement. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within and beyond this team to contribute to a vibrant student life program that engages students across campus.

Duties of the role include but are not limited to :

  • Supervise the Coordinator for Orientation and New Student Programs as well as a Graduate Assistant for Orientation
  • Lead efforts for all orientation programs including First-Year Student, Transfer Student, Commuter Student, and Family & Parents
  • Monitor and maintain all budgets related to Orientation and Transition Programs
  • Coordinate orientation for all new students which includes two one-day transfer orientation programs each winter; five one-day transfer programs each summer; and 5-6 first-year orientation sessions each summer
  • Provide vision and leadership to the entire Orientation staff which includes, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and supervising student employees and full-time summer professionals. Develop training programs for all staff members that include leadership, understanding of first-year transition issues / resources. Coordinate staff meetings and retreats on a regular scheduled basis.
  • Provide leadership for all Parent & Family engagement including but not limited to : Planning and execution of summer Parent & Family programs and Parent & Family Weekend
  • Assist with updating the Campus ESP Program with the Office of Communication and Marketing
  • Plan and implement the Senior Year Experience
  • Assist in the consultation, review, and approval of student club events
  • Assist in the management of the student engagement / student organizations and clubs platform, Anthology Engage
  • Work will include nights and weekends in the form of rotational office coverage and assigned programming; flexibility of scheduled hours to support departmental programs expected
  • Serve on the Student Affairs committees and working groups

Qualifications : Required :

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of three years of direct relevant experience
  • Professional experience with knowledge in student activities, event planning, orientation, facilities operations, hospitality management, or college student personnel
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with trainings, conflict resolution, and mediation methods
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and in developing inclusive communities and work teams
  • Strong organizational ability, interpersonal skills, strategic and analytical skills
  • Ability to conceptualize, organize, and coordinate programs
  • Preferred :

  • Master’s degree in higher education student affairs, communications, public relations, education or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience using technology to enhance student engagement
  • Experience mentoring or advising students
  • Experience with Anthology Engage, Banner, Argos, and Slate software
  • Ability to work within a dynamic environment and a proven competence in managing multiple tasks and competing priorities
