What are the responsibilities and job description for the Customer Service Representative position at State University of New York College of Optometry?
We are seeking talented and enthusiastic individuals to engage with our patients and serve as a primary contact and welcoming first impression for our patients and visitors. As a Customer Service Representative, you will work collaboratively with providers and staff and liaison between patients and other departments within the UEC. You will be responsible for exceptional customer service and creating a warm and friendly patient reception. You will facilitate enrollment in our patient portal and assist patients with kiosk functions. Using NextGen Electronic Health Record and Practice Management System, you will respond to staff and patient inquiries, schedule appointments, patient registration, insurance verification, authorizations, and payment processing.
You will be responsible to provide patients with timely, accurate, and professional service, independently resolve issues, and thoroughly document inquiries and outcomes. You will also advise patients of their vision and medical plan coverage, coordinate the provision of any special needs for the patients, and provide the public with information regarding UEC and College activities and programs.
Required
Tuesday to Thursday: 12:00pm to 8:00pm; Friday and Saturday: 8:30am to 4:30pm. Off Sunday and Monday.
Annual Salary (including location pay) is $48,400, and there is also a generous benefit package. 15 days of annual leave to start and 13 paid holidays per year. We are a qualifying employer in the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. View our Benefits at Glance.

Required
- Two years of experience working in customer service (preferably in a healthcare, hospitality, call center, or client service environment).
- Ability to work evenings and Saturdays.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent listening, communication, and writing skills.
- Excellent phone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Knowledge of managed care and other third-party payers.
- Knowledge of insurance verification and authorization.
- Optical/vision care experience.
- Experience with computerized Practice Management (PM) and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Bachelor’s degree and/or bilingual skills.
