What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corey Union Student Director Fall 2025-Spring 2026 position at State University of New York, Cortland?
/Duties
Administrative: The Student Director assumes the administrative duties and responsibilities of the Union Administrator while on duty. This includes the function and operation of the building during the hours they are assigned.
General Responsibilities:

- Opening and closing of the building
- To secure the building while on duty
- To act as a program facilitator
- Supervision of student employees
- Complete administrative tasks as assigned
Specific Responsibilities:
- Perform hourly checks of the building, ensuring proper lighting in all areas and that authorized exit doors are unlocked. These checks are to be accompanied by hourly Round Reports.
- Be sure all offices and service rooms are kept locked at all times.
- Check I.D.s when the situation requires.
- Know the usual locations of all furnishings and equipment. Report anything that is missing or damaged to Direct Supervisor and University Police if necessary.
- Speak to anyone who may intentionally or inadvertently abuse equipment or furniture. Contact University Police if necessary.
- If the situation merits, the Student Director is authorized to lock or evacuate any building area.
- When alcohol is served, check that SUNY Alcohol Policies have been followed.
- Be alert for safety hazards. Check first aid kits periodically. Be familiar with fire/evacuation procedures.
- Complete the Student Director Report at the end of each shift, indicating problems, quantities of people using the building, or any other general information.
- Secure the building before leaving. Investigate any unauthorized people remaining in there after closing.
- At the night’s close, call University Police, indicating you are leaving. Give names and I.D. numbers of all authorized people remaining in the building after closing.
- Update daily event schedules posted in displays throughout the building.
- Update and maintain room schedules using EMS as assigned.
- Update and maintain Corey Union’s calendar using Outlook Calendar as assigned.
Service and Duties:
- Upon arrival, check all set-ups/room arrangements to see that everything requested is ready or available.
- Open facilities for an organization’s use before the requested time.
- Check with the event/meeting organizer to see that everything is in order and if anything is needed. Remind the organization of their responsibilities (for example – clean up).
- When audio/visual equipment is required, be sure equipment is available, proper forms are filled out. At the close of the program, make sure all equipment is returned.
- During periodic checks of the building, inspect all bulletin boards. Remove any unauthorized signs, posters, or materials that are outdated. Remove anything taped to walls, wood, or glass.
- Act as unofficial host to any guests of the College and assist visiting artists until an organization representative can be found, etc.
- If needed, after the completion of an event, be sure maintenance personnel have provided the organization’s lead person with any materials necessary for clean up.
- When touring the building, maintain furniture arrangements. Pick up any unsightly paper, etc., and be aware of hazards.
- Always be courteous to people using the Union and try to assist them.
- Attend all Student Director training sessions and meetings as required.
Days/Hours Needed
Evenings and weekends. Other hours as assigned based on need.
Monday through Friday shifts are 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. (occasionally as late as 2 a.m.)
Saturday and Sunday shifts are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. (occasionally as late as 2 a.m.)
Event Director shifts are assigned as needed.
All hours are subject to change based on need.
Corey Union is scheduled to go offline in December 2025 for renovation. This will require activities usually scheduled in Corey Union to relocate during the renovation. Additional support in other areas of campus and/or the adjustment of staffing may also be required.

Required Qualifications
Must be a current SUNY Cortland student. Must also be a highly motivated self-starter who has and can maintain a 2.6 overall GPA while working in the position—ability to work with diverse groups.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledgeable in audio/visual technology (sound systems, computers, projectors, etc.)
Physical Demands
Some lifting and carrying of various audio-visual and other equipment.
