SUNY Maritime College invites applications for the position of Commandant of Cadets. This position is accountable for every facet of the Regiment of Cadets with duties and responsibilities including the following:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversight and Administration
Reporting to Vice President of Regimental Affairs, the Commandant of Cadets is responsible for the oversight and operation of the Regiment of Cadets and for the implementation of a comprehensive leadership program for all SUNY Maritime College Cadets, including overseeing the leadership seminars, training workshops and other leadership development programming. Working with the Dean of Students, serves as curriculum co-supervisor for the leadership course sequence (LEAD 201 and LEAD 401).
Regimental Administration
- The Regiment of Cadets follows a uniformed structured lifestyle and consists of the necessary command and staff cadets to lead and administer the cadet regiment composed of battalions.
- The Commandant is responsible for ensuring the personal and professional development of the Regiment of Cadets at SUNY Maritime College, including regimental administration, counseling, training, education, and discipline to regimental cadets. Responsible for ensuring a sense of mentorship and personal/professional development of the cadets, including the coordination of 10-day indoctrination program (INDOC) for first year cadets. Responsible for evaluating, and assessing the cadet watch programs, including the education and training components.
- Liaison with all related campus and Training Ship Empire State administrators in supporting cadet development. Responsible for managing and implementing SUNY Maritime College's Regimental Rules and Regulations aligned with college policies and student code of conduct.
- Monitors and supervise cadet activities during the academic year and summer sea term. Responsible for the administration of all cadet activities including planning and conducting leadership exercises, maintaining regimental policies, and community events.
Management of Department
- Responsible for all supervisory components to include and are not limited to personnel recommendations, performance evaluation reviews, and attendance approvals for the Regimental department's employees. Oversees the department's budget, procurement procedures and performs monthly reconciliation of credit card purchases within established deadlines; ensures that purchases and budget balance.
Student Conduct
- The Commandant and the Dean of Student Affairs work as a team to ensure oversight and administration of the Student Code of Conduct for the cadets and the colleges' core values, including revisions to related policies and regulations in the Student Handbook and Regimental Rules and Regulations. Works closely with the Dean of Student Affairs to assure due process when a cadet has been charged with misconduct. Responsible for the execution of cadet random drug testing program.
New Student Orientation
- Supports the Dean of Student Affairs efforts to develop, coordinate and implement the New Student Orientation Program.
Annual Training Cruise
- The Summer Sea Term is an annual 85-day training program aboard the college's training ship that includes visits to ports in the United States and abroad. The successful incumbent will be required to participate in part of the training cruise. This requires the incumbent to obtain a Merchant Mariners Document issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. This will include physical and drug test, and eligibility to work in the U.S. The successful incumbent will be responsible for ensuring consistency between the campus and annual training cruise leadership development programs, federal, state, local and SUNY policies.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree
- 5 years of demonstrated success in leadership development
- Prior service as an active duty or reserve commissioned officer or management-level US Coast Guard license
- Must qualify for Merchant Mariners Document issued by the U.S. Coast Guard
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
- Demonstrated leadership and personal integrity skills with proven ability to motivate others
- Practical work experience in programs, curriculum, youth organizations, or personal mentoring in a formal education environment with experience in implementing and managing large programs
- Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks; demonstrated organizational skills
- Desire to work in a student-centered environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in organizational development, behavioral science, leadership, counseling, or related discipline
- Prior service as an active duty or reserve command-level commissioned officer or US Coast Guard license as a ship's Master
- Knowledge of the maritime industry
- Experience in Student Affairs and Higher Education
- Experience with Title IX
- Ability to function in a structured, uniformed environment

Classification/Salary Range: The Director of Athletics is a Management Confidential position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $105,000.00 to $135,000.00 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. For more information please see the MC13-Unclassified-Benefits-at-Glance. Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
