Essential Functions

1. Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of interoperability solutions to enable smooth communication across multiple systems, applications, and devices. Drive technical initiatives and serve as the subject matter expert for complex integration challenges.
2. Ensure all system integrations comply with industry standards such as HL7, FHIR, IHE, REST, SOAP, and other related protocols, while also ensuring compatibility with evolving regulatory requirements.
3. Partner with developers, product managers, system architects, and external vendors to define, implement, troubleshoot, and continuously improve integration solutions. Lead cross-functional teams to resolve high-priority integration issues and streamline workflows.
4. Establish comprehensive documentation on integration processes, system configurations, and workflows. Provide mentorship and guidance on documentation best practices to junior engineers.
5. Regularly monitor the performance of integrated systems and provide strategic recommendations for optimizing data accuracy, system reliability, and overall operational efficiency.
6. Ensure all data exchanges and integration activities meet regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, GDPR, and other privacy laws, and work to maintain an understanding of the evolving regulatory landscape.
7. Lead the development and execution of robust test plans to validate interoperability solutions, including load testing, regression testing, and validation against integration requirements. Drive continuous testing efforts as part of the integration lifecycle.
8. Stay ahead of emerging integration trends and technologies, identifying opportunities to incorporate cutting-edge solutions into existing and new systems. Foster a culture of innovation and improvement within the team.
9. Provide leadership and mentoring to junior engineers, sharing knowledge, offering technical advice, and ensuring that integration practices adhere to best practices and industry standards.

Supervisory and Managerial Responsibility

  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility but may provide leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education, Licensure or Certification:
  • Knowledge of computer science or engineering or a closely related field as normally obtained through the
completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications in relevant areas are a plus.
  • Certification in interoperability standards such as HL7, FHIR, or other industry-recognized credentials preferred

Work Experience or Related Experience:
  • Extensive experience (typically 5 years) in systems integration and interoperability within healthcare, financial, or enterprise environments.
  • In-depth experience in integration protocols, such as HL7, FHIR, CDA, REST, and SOAP.
  • Strong hands-on experience with integration programs like Mirth Connect, Apache Camel, or similar technologies.
  • Solid background with cloud technologies, microservice architecture, middleware technologies, and API management platforms.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale integration projects and managing cross-functional team collaboration.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Expertise in programming and scripting languages, such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, for developing and troubleshooting integration solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to address complex integration challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate across multiple departments.
  • Experience with healthcare IT systems, Electronic Health Records (EHR), and Health Information Exchanges (HIE) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines, and integration testing processes.
  • Thorough understanding of data security and privacy practices, particularly in regulated industries such as healthcare and finance.
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and guide junior engineers in technical areas and best practices.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment and balance multiple competing priorities.

  • Work is generally preformed in an office environment or remote setting in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions.

  • Work requires normal range of hearing and eyesight. Incumbent must be able to use a telephone or head set equipment and operate a keyboard and other office equipment. The ability to perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours a day and function in an environment with constant interruptions is required. At times, incumbents are subject to sitting for prolonged periods. Infrequently, incumbent must be able to lift and move material weighing up to 20 lbs. Incumbent may experience elevated levels of stress during periods of decreased activity and with work entailing multiple deadlines.
