Position Objective
To provide research and background report information required for pre-employment screenings. This position is responsible for gathering information, completing comprehensive pre-employment investigations and preparing reports to determine suitability of employment for all candidates in the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Conducts pre-employment background investigations through interviews with the candidate, family, friends, acquaintances and previous employers.
- Gathers and reviews factual, confidential and open source documents and data related to the candidate.
- Compiles and summarizes information received during the background investigation and creates a clear, concise and objective narrative report.
- Assists background investigators from other agencies in obtaining information and records from Stearns County in accordance with county policy and state statute.
- Partners with law enforcement organizations, courts, educational institutions and other businesses to complete background investigations of individuals.
- Accesses and utilizes information from restricted and confidential data bases in accordance with county policy, state guidelines and state statute.
- Participates in training and certification related to background investigations, use of government data bases and data privacy statutes.
- Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
- Performs others duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications and Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess one of the following the following:
- High School graduate or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in criminal justice, social work, human services or a related field AND Two years of work experience as Sergeant or higher in a law enforcement agency OR
- Six years as a licensed Peace Officer by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST Board) OR
- Six years performing employment applicant investigative work in a government or investigative agency
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
- Training or certification in background investigations, data privacy or related fields
- Field experience in background screening and investigations
- Knowledge of public service activities and county policies.
- Knowledge of online databases and usage policies.
- Knowledge of law enforcement terminology and procedures.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion and effectively and thoroughly complete investigations and reports.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Ability to gather and research information and write summary reports.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to accept and complete assigned work in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 100% of the time indoors. May require occasional travel to off-site locations. Will have infrequent exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a low level of physical effort. All employees are required to reside within the state of Minnesota.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lieutenant of Patrol.
