Overview
Level 1 Automation Engineer (Sinton, TX and relocation or travel to various unanticipated locations) to develop and design thermo-mechanical processing procedures for steel mill.
Responsibilities
- Develop and design engineering technology that will provide improvements to the operations and interfaces that enhance the operator’s ease of control and ability to monitor the process.
- Implement and test design solutions for mill automation.
- Perform diagnostic testing on mill equipment to determine trends toward equipment failures.
- Perform backups of all software related to mill operation and support systems.
- Service automation hardware and programming interfaces.
- Ensure work group safety and a safe work environment for the entire department relating to changes in process control.
- Monitor mill performance relating to volume, quality, delay rate and yield and develop automation technology improvements in these areas.
- Develop technicians troubleshooting skills and programming skills.
- Keep the work group and department up to date on changes affecting mill operations.
- Monitor system operations and the interface to these systems which the operators use.
Qualifications
Required:
- Safety Oriented, understanding fundamentals of electrical safety practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- Emphasis on coursework consisting of advanced mathematics.
- Emphasis on coursework consisting of electrical fundamentals.
- Understanding of power distribution systems.
- Understanding of induction and synchronous motor theory.
- Understanding of mechanical and hydraulic systems of all types.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in heavy industry environment (steel manufacturing or equivalent) required.
- Understanding of steel rolling principles as it applies to hot and cold rolling facilities.
- Proven logical approach to troubleshooting.
- Proven ability to teach and develop electrical technicians.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Required to be on call and available in support of 24/7 production environment.
- Experience with TMEIC drives and the ‘TM Drive Navigator tool’.
- Advanced abilities using P.C.’s and common software and utilities.
- Experience with database programming and usage and SQL syntax.
- Proficiency with CAD programming.
- Experience with closed loop, high speed PID regulation systems.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with PLC based systems or equivalent.
- Experience with function block-based IDE and programming environments.
- Experience with HMI development and programming.
- Experience working with process control systems (DCS).
- Experience with industrial networking; switches, communication protocols, network sniffers, etc.
