Job Description:
Corporate CWI/Quality Technician
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to: Corporate Quality Manager
- Corporate Quality Manager reports to the director of Continuous Improvement and Quality
- Director of Continuous Improvement and Quality reports to: VP of Manufacturing
What You’ll Do:
As a Corporate CWI/Quality Technician, you will play a key role in ensuring Steel King’s manufacturing processes maintain the highest standards of quality and compliance. Your daily activities will focus on inspections, certifications, and providing technical expertise for welding operations. You will work closely with the Corporate Quality Manager to maintain strict adherence to industry standards and Steel King’s internal guidelines.
Here’s a glimpse of your day-to-day responsibilities:

Inspection and Compliance: Conduct welding inspections on Steel King products and perform required stamped inspections when specified by contract documents.
- Documentation Management: Maintain and submit approved documentation for stamped inspections to the Corporate Quality Manager.
- Calibration Audits: Oversee the calibration of welding and inspection equipment and perform audits to maintain compliance with internal and external standards.
- Welder Training and Qualification: Assist in the development and administration of welder training programs, including evaluating and qualifying welders and monitoring their progress.
- Random Audits and Monitoring: Conduct random audits of non-certified inspectors and welding processes to ensure compliance with authorized Steel King WPS’s, codes, and standards.
- Welder Qualifications: Manage continuity audits of welder qualifications and ensure compliance with qualification testing documentation.
- Technical Resource: Serve as a resource for technical support on the shop floor and assist in troubleshooting welding-related issues as they arise.
- PAPR Training and Issuance: Oversee the administration of the PAPR weld hood program, including training and tracking.
- Additional Responsibilities: Assist with the development of PQR and WPS documents, lockout auditing of welder settings, and other duties as assigned by the Corporate Quality Manager.

Uphold Standards: Champion adherence to AWS standards, Steel King guidelines, and corporate policies, contributing to Steel King's overall quality strategy.
- Collaboration Across Departments: Work closely with the Corporate Quality Manager, manufacturing teams, and plant staff to ensure the highest levels of product quality.
- Continuous Improvement: Apply your knowledge to help drive improvements in processes, ensuring that Steel King remains compliant and competitive in the industry.
What We’re Looking For:
We need a motivated individual with the technical expertise and passion for welding quality and compliance. If you have the following qualifications and experience, we’d love to meet you:
Education & Certifications:
- CWI Certification or the ability to become certified within 12 months. (Review attached AWS QC1)
- CWB Supervisor Certification or the ability to obtain it within 6 months after receiving CWI Certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent GED required.
Knowledge & Experience:
- In-depth understanding of welding processes, including the ability to weld, read blueprints, and use fabrication equipment.
- Familiarity with AWS D1.1, AWS D1.3, and AWS A2.4.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing practices, including 5S, Six Sigma, Kaizen events, and continuous improvement strategies.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot welding equipment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts and occasional vibration.
- Noise levels typically high; ear protection required.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that involve frequent bending, stooping, and reaching.
- Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Safety Considerations:
Safety is always our top priority. In this role, you may encounter:
- Electrical hazards and moving mechanical parts.
- Fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals during welding operations.
- Must follow safety protocols at all times and wear necessary protective equipment such as safety glasses and steel-toed shoes.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel to the customer’s location for inspection as needed.
- Other SKII Sites as needed.
