Manufacturing Engineer / Production Cell Engineer
Reporting Relationships
The Manufacturing Engineer / Production Cell Engineer reports to the Director of Continuous Improvement & Quality.
Organizational Relationships
Interfaces with other departments and personnel for the purpose of analyzing and supplying information to achieve established processing and manufacturing requirements.
Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer / Production Cell Engineer supports the plant for installation, troubleshooting, redesign, repair, and upkeep of tooling and equipment. This is achieved through engineering, mathematics, and physics, along with knowledge of facilities, cellular manufacturing /layout, build, test, troubleshooting and general understanding of production tooling and equipment.
Essential Job Functions
- Improve manufacturing methods, processes, and tooling for cost reductions, quality improvements, lead time, and efficiency opportunities through the implementation of lean manufacturing principles.
- Design, develop, test, source, and cost justify various tools, machinery, dies, fixtures and equipment for manufacturing efficiency improvements and process improvements.
- Develop, organize, and maintain tracking and monitoring of roll forming tooling/die sets to be used during capital projects.
- Organize equipment shut down schedules for tooling changes to minimize loss of production and profits
- Observe and oversee repairs of equipment to detect hazards, problems, and the need for service, repair and/or replacement of components.
- Keep records related to managing tooling/die budgets and yearly costs
- Implement capital projects in a timely manner as required, to a budget and with minimal impact to current customer demands.
- Assist with development of a three-year capital plan to reduce manufacturing costs.
- Read, analyze, and create documents, such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Develop manufacturing work standards through job analysis, best ergonomic practices, and process flow analysis.
- Develop and implement process controls, procedures, and inspection processes.
- Perform product/process analysis for cost reduction and improved efficiency (3P events).
- Coordinate manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members, and evaluating results.
- Assist with establishing production standards and safety goals.
- Participate in Kaizen events within the facility.
- Discuss performance issues and improvement ideas with relevant technical staff.
- Oversee and maintain metrics and standards established during continuous improvement events.
- Perform additional duties as assigned

Education/Experience Required
- BSME/BSIE in Engineering either in Manufacturing or Industrial Studies or equivalent
- 2 to 5 years’ experience in related fields
- Lean Manufacturing experience or education
- Capital improvement and quality experience
- Computer aided design experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Problem analysis and problem resolution skills
- Read and interpret drawings to comply with engineering standards.
- Ability to communicate in a professional, respectful, and effective manner in both written and oral communication with internal and external customers
- Establish a working relationship with all employees to project a positive and teambuilding attitude
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing techniques
- Understanding of metal fabrication operations including powder coat application and welding concepts
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and JD Edwards manufacturing programs
- Technical skills in manufacturing processes and methods including flow, layout, automation, assembly and production equipment with associated tooling & dies
- Ability to think ahead and plan over a 3 to 6 month time span
- Ability to organize, project plan, and manage multiple projects
- Ability to use and comprehend CAD
- Establish data collection, analysis, and modeling
- Perform cost savings analysis
- Capacity utilization studies and production standard development and auditing
- Ability to prepare technical reports for documenting issues/changes to equipment
- Ability to manage projects for implementing changes and improvements
- Ability to adhere to company safety policies including wearing appropriate PPE
Tool Usage Requirements
- General hand tools
- Power tools, including but not limited to, drill motors, sawzall, band saw, hammer drill, etc.
- Shop equipment, including but not limited to, vertical mill, horizontal band saw, drill press, belt sanders, grinders, etc.
