The Design Engineer position is responsible for providing engineering support for order pursuit, post contract support for drafting, and assisting outsourced engineering providers, for Self- Storage and Pre-Engineered Metal Building projects.
Core Functions:
- Perform review of project documents and comment on potential design issues prior to commencing with estimating, detailing, or professional engineer review.
- Provide clear design direction for complex self-storage projects, or pre-engineered metal buildings using AutoCAD, MBS, TEKLA, or other computer-aided drafting technology.
- Provide supporting design documentation as required by project scope and applicable building codes.
- Aid in the design of project specific components to meet structural and design criteria.
- Perform review of external engineer comments for conformance with AIS standards.
- Mentor and train department personnel.
- Provide sales with the necessary building design details to meet customer requests.
- Determine if building designs can be value engineered.
- Meet multiple project deadlines while providing accurate project deliverables.
- Learn and use other software for miscellaneous projects (ex: plant engineering, marketing, product design, or installation guides)
- Interact with internal and external customers and external engineering to clarify project scope, details, and product limitations.
- Communicate with internal customers regarding requests for project information, status, and schedules.
- Manage complex outsourced drafting projects (assemble, send, check, finalize) for complex self-storage or pre-engineered metal buildings.
Key Measures of Success:
- Ability to successfully provide engineering design support and documentation for the sale and installation of our metal building products.
- Ability to share knowledge of heavy structural and light gauge steel building designs, means, and methods.
- Self-motivated, able to prioritize tasks, and be proactive in follow up on questions from internal and external customers.
- Ability to investigate problems and potential errors to avoid reoccurrence.
- Display proficiency in AutoCAD or comparable design software.
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills and display exceptional customer service.
- Ability to work within a cooperative team environment as well as perform assignments autonomously.

Education & Experience:
Minimum Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related construction engineering related field from an accredited institution.
- 2-3 years’ experience with AutoCAD software.
Preferred:
- 2-3 years’ experience in an Engineering setting with design experience.
- 2-3 years’ experience with MBS or TEKLA software.
- Completed F.E. Exam.
- Intention to complete the P.E. Exam.
- Licensed Professional Engineer is a plus.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Work is performed in a shared office space. This role will routinely utilize standard office equipment to perform the core functions listed in this job description. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies (up to 35 lbs.) as well as communicate verbally and electronically. The work is primarily sedentary and requires extensive reading to perform the core functions listed in this job description. While performing the core function of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and stand.
