Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine tests in various sections of the medical laboratory, including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
- Answer phone calls and respond to inquiries from doctors, hospital staff, and other callers.
- Interpret physician orders and obtain requisitions before conducting tests.
- Verify patient identity using two identifiers.
- Collect and process specimens while maintaining patient comfort.
- Label and date specimens for analysis.
- Evaluate specimen quality and quantity.
- Prepare specimens for testing and deliver them to the correct work area.
- Conduct blood draws from patients' fingers, veins, or arteries while observing aseptic principles.
- Perform quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses on body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid.
- Carry out blood counts.
- Conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes.
- Process medical specimens, including blood, stool, sputum, throat cultures, and water samples.
- Notify healthcare providers of lab results and critical values.
- Document all lab requests and results accurately.
- Recognize abnormalities and promptly notify healthcare providers.
- Perform daily and monthly quality control, maintenance, and cleaning procedures according to guidelines.
- Order and restock supplies as needed.
- Receive shipments of supplies and verify their contents against invoices.
- Collect drug screens with chain-of-custody documentation (DOT and non-DOT).
- Perform Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) and complete associated chain-of-custody documents.
- Collect paternity tests and complete associated chain-of-custody documentation.
- Conduct EKGs.
- Perform therapeutic phlebotomy when necessary.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of an associate's degree from a recognized institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two to four years of related experience or training may be considered in lieu of formal education.
