Description
The Outside Sales Representative maintains business with current accounts at profitable levels; cultivates new business accounts; advises the Director of Sales of developments in inventory requirements; communicates sales information to the VP of Sales and inside sales staff; and maintains the image of SteelSummit in the business community as a quality steel service center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sustain existing business relationships by ensuring ongoing satisfaction and promptly addressing issues.
- Cultivate new business opportunities through proactive outreach and networking.
- Investigate and address steel rejections promptly and effectively to maintain quality standards and customer satisfaction.
- Analyze pricing dynamics by monitoring competitors' pricing strategies, discussing findings with the Director of Sales, and offering competitive pricing to customers when advantageous.
- Coordinate with Inside Sales to understand and fulfill customer requirements.
- Regularly report to the Director of Sales on issues with current accounts, progress in securing new business, potential customer prospects, prevailing market conditions, and pricing dynamics.
- Generate and maintain a sales forecast for the upcoming three-month period, updating it monthly by the fifteenth day to reflect evolving market conditions and business projections.
- Compile comprehensive Sales Call Reports, detailing schedules, market insights, and customer feedback to inform strategic decision-making and improve sales performance.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree (Business or Communications preferred) or equivalent experience. Two years sales experience. One to two years experience in the steel industry.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees must be able to drive, use the telephone and the computer; read charts, tags and written procedures; print or write legibly to complete all required paperwork. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS:
This individual should possess a drivers’ license and proficiency in utilizing various tools including telephones, computers, and calculators.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The primary work site is on the road. The sales representative makes customer calls 80% of the time. The balance of the time is spent in the office. It is on two levels and accessible via stairs directly from the parking lot. The office is climate-controlled.
SUPERVISION AND CO-WORKERS/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Supervision and/or co-worker assistance available at all times. Attendance is monitored. Unscheduled absences may result in failure to meet customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.
CONSEQUENCES IF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS NOT PERFORMED
- Failure to maintain current business and generate new business may result in loss of company profitability and viability.
- Failure to investigate steel rejections may result in the customer and loss of company profitability.
- Failure to communicate with Inside Sales or the Director of Sales may result in unacceptable levels of customer service, which, in turn, may result in loss of the customer.
- Failure to generate sales forecasts in a timely manner may result in improper inventory levels, which, in turn, may result in loss of the order.
