Description
The Central Sterilization Technician is responsible for cleaning, assembling, sterilizing and/or reprocessing all equipment, supplies and instruments according to regulatory requirements and industry standards. The Central Sterilization Technician assists with maintaining the supply and implant inventory and reports to the Director of Nurses.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Cleans, decontaminates and/or sterilizes patient use items according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the Center’s policies and procedures.
2. Demonstrates proper care and handling of powered equipment.
3. Provides effective and timely decontamination of instruments and supplies to facilitate efficient room turn-over.
4. Inspects all instrumentation for proper functioning after cleaning.
5. Ensures proper reassembly and storage of all instrument trays.
6. Performs biological testing and maintains required records for all sterilization equipment.
7. Follows established infection control policies and procedures.
8. Performs required environmental and/or equipment maintenance procedures.
9. Monitors and controls the environment.
10. Assists with maintaining implant and central supply inventories.
11. Coordinates all activities of assistive staff in the reprocessing area.
12. Respects patient’s rights.
13. Assists with patient care and transport as needed.
14. Performs other tasks as assigned.

16. Maintains a collegial relationship with physicians to ensure quality patient care.

Requirements
Qualifications
1. High school graduate.
2. Current proof of BLS training/education or ability to obtain within 6 month
3. One year experience as Central Sterile Technician preferred
4. Must be able to adapt to repetitive, short cycle operations.
5. Must be able to organize and prioritize work.
6. Must have mechanical ability to operate large equipment, to disassemble and assemble instruments, and have familiarity with surgical instrumentation.
7. Competence in oral and written communication skills.
8. Basic computer skills, ability to learn new inventory system software.
9. Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy
Physical Requirements:
1. Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use
stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
2. Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and
reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
3. Physically: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted,
including assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual
dexterity to perform the requisite health care service. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.
4. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.
