QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Experience: No special license needed! Prefer experience driving and/or transporting people. Excellent schedule!
Education and Training
1. Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
2. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is preferred.
3. Must be or become certified in first aid and CPR.
4. Must satisfactorily pass a Department of Human Services criminal background check.
5. Must have a valid Class D driver’s license and a driving record consistent with insurer’s guidelines
6. Must successfully complete a Department of Transportation physical examination.
7. Must have ability to work with and feel comfortable working with persons with developmental disabilities.
8. Must have physical ability to assist in loading and unloading wheelchair passengers.
Job Summary
Vehicle drivers transport clients with disabilities to and from their residences to STEP facilities. They assist clients in loading and exiting the vehicles and secure wheelchairs to assure client safety. Drivers assure that vehicles are clean and are in good operating condition.
Major Job Duties
- Drive clients to and from residences on daily routes.
- Maintain safety of clients through safe driving and safe passenger assistance.
- Perform daily check of vehicle operation systems including: brake lights, turn signals, etc.
- Provide input to supervisor regarding scheduling of vehicle routes.
- Assists with safe loading and unloading of clients, including the operation of wheelchair lift and securing of wheelchairs.
- Coordinate maintenance and cleaning of vehicles with appropriate agency staff.
- As rider or driver, safely prepares for and transports clients utilizing company vehicles as directed. Appropriately uses wheelchair lift, secure wheelchairs, and other assistive devices.
- Effectively and promptly communicates problems and concerns to the immediate supervisor regarding clients, vehicles, safety, and other transportation issues.
- Participates in in-service and training and employee reviews as required by agency policy and applicable governmental rules.
- Is familiar with and adheres to agency procedures and policies (e.g. Vulnerable Adult Policies, Behavioral Support Policies, Emergency procedures, employee policies, etc.)
- Maintain equipment, work areas, vehicles, and common areas in a neat and clean manner and communicate problems promptly to the supervisor.
- Transfer clients with physical disabilities safely and correctly using appropriate methods and ergonomics. May require mechanical lifts, personal transferring, two-person lifts, wheelchairs and other equipment.
- Respects and maintains the confidentiality of clients and of agency information. Appropriately shares and seeks out information on a need-to-know basis.
