Job Description
Stepan is seeking a Research Chemist to join our R&D team in Northfield, IL. In this role, you will report to the Process Chemistry & Technology manager. As a Research Chemist, you will play a crucial role in leading process optimization, scale up and technical transfer of primarily surfactant blend products that have end applications in the consumer space. In this role, the Research Chemist will design and execute experiments to scale up laboratory processes to pilot and production scales. Responsibilities for this role will include both the process development of new products and the process optimization of existing products, implementing new methodologies to enhance process performance and conducting root cause analysis to troubleshoot process-related issues. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge and experience in one or more of these areas : surfactant product development, formulation science and techniques, colloid and interfacial science, process optimization and scale-up, and / or process engineering. Expertise in machine learning, data science and high throughput testing techniques is highly desirable. Sustainability acumen is a plus.
Key Responsibilities :
- Design and execute experiments to scale up laboratory processes to pilot and production scales with a focus on surfactant blend products.
- Lead cross-functional teams to ensure seamless scale up from lab to production.
- Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed in a timely manner
- Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshoot process-related issues with engineering, quality, analytical, and manufacturing teams.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings.
- Implement approved project plans independently and through one or more team members.
- Utilize statistical tools and software for data analysis and process optimization.
- Regularly review technical information, patents, literature, and global regulations pertinent to fields of expertise. Communicate relevant findings to team members and utilize them for new innovations.
- Innovate through technical knowledge, creativity, and vision to build and expand the technical toolbox.
- Generate ELN documentation, technical reports, presentations, patents and other documentation to ensure communication, compliance and value creation.
- Consider and prioritize sustainability aspects when developing or improving Stepan technologies.
- Lead safety / waste programs and steadfastly adheres to safety policies / standards.

Pay Range : $83,000 - $127,000
The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
