What are the responsibilities and job description for the Athletic Trainer II (Football) position at Stephen F. Austin University?
This is a professional position responsible for coordinating the treatment of injuries to student-athletes in assigned sport(s). Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Reports to the Director of Sports Medicine.
Essential Job Functions
1. Serves as the lead trainer for assigned sport(s).
2. Oversees the application of therapeutic modalities and treatments in the training room.
3. Aids in the prevention of athletic injuries by administering preventative taping, purchasing and fitting special protective equipment, and maintaining safety conditions at practices and competitions.
4. Designs, implements, and coordinates the rehabilitation program for players after surgery, with off-season injuries, or using preventive exercise in response to pre-season screening results.
5. Administers emergency procedures to injured athletes in assigned sports during practices and games.
6. Maintains records of treatments and injuries of all student-athletes seen and treated in the training rooms. Supervises the distribution of approved medications under the orders of the team physician.
7. Assigns and supervises graduate and student assistants assigned to the training rooms.
8. Coordinates the scheduling and conduct of pre-season athletic physicals for all student-athletes.
9. Prepares reports on injured student-athletes for the head coach and provides periodic progress reports on the rehabilitation of injured players.
10. Makes arrangements for training room supplies and equipment to be transported on trips.
11. Conducts training sessions for other athletic trainers, graduate and student assistants and supervises graduate assistants in the performance of athletic medicine activities.
12. Develops sports medicine policies, procedures, and protocols in close collaboration with physicians and strength/conditioning staff.
13. Coordinates physician and auxiliary treatment services.
14. Assists in the management of the sports medicine facility.
15. Assists in developing and managing the sports medicine budget.
Non-Essential Job Functions
1. Makes appointments for student-athletes to see private physicians, as necessary.
2. Remains on 24-hour call to sports specific players for treatment and/or counseling, as assigned.
3. Meets with recruits, as assigned, to tour department training rooms and discuss injuries and rehabilitation programs.
4. Attends university, conference, NCAA, and other organizational meetings, as assigned.
5. Adheres to all applicable NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.
6. Travels with teams to away games, as required.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, health, exercise science, or a related field is required.
Required Experience and Training
Three years of related experience is required with a minimum of two years of collegiate athletic training experience in assigned sport(s). NATA certification, athletic trainer licensure in Texas, and instructor level certification in CPR and first aid is required. Candidates without current Texas license will be considered if license can be obtained prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree is preferred.
