What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shuttle Bus Driver position at Stephen F. Austin University?
This is a service position responsible for operating university vehicles to safely and efficiently transport passengers and cargo to specified destinations. Responsible for driving shuttle vehicles on a specified route and schedule; conducting vehicle inspections; performing routine maintenance; and scheduling maintenance and/or repairs as needed. Serves as back up to other departmental staff, as assigned. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Manager of Transportation & Special Services.
Essential Job Functions
1. Drives university vehicles including, but not limited to, shuttle buses, mini buses, and vans over specified routes to transport passengers and/or cargo across campus and to university-sponsored events at remote locations.
2. Conducts daily vehicle inspections, ‘pre’ and ‘post’ trip vehicle inspections, and safety checks at regular intervals.
3. Performs routine vehicle maintenance such as filling gas tank when needed, checking tire pressure, and checking fluid levels.
4. Reports any potentially hazardous vehicle maintenance issues. Schedules needed maintenance and/or repairs.
5. Provides assistance to passengers as needed and assists handicapped passengers on and off of vehicle, ensuring safe transport.
6. Operates assigned equipment in a safe manner and in adherence to university and transportation policies as well as local, state, and federal laws.
7. Maintains record of passenger numbers and/or log book as required.
8. Maintains cleanliness of equipment assigned during shift.
9. Performs various physically demanding tasks in support of other department shops and crews including, but not limited to, special services, custodial, and grounds maintenance.
Non-Essential Job Functions
1. May operate service vehicles and heavy equipment including dump trucks, garbage trucks, trailers, and rollers, as assigned.
2. May work overtime for special events after normal working hours and on weekends as needed.
3. May assist in training new drivers by teaching and demonstrating driving techniques, evaluating and providing feedback to the drivers, and retraining as necessary.
4. May operate road bus.
5. Performs other related duties as assigned.

9. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license, SFA permit, and van certification prior to employment.
10. Ability to obtain and maintain commercial driver’s license (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
11. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
12. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Physical Demands Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Required Experience and Training
One year of related experience is required. Commercial driving experience or experience operating non-commercial vehicles to transport passengers is required. Valid vehicle operator’s license and good driving record is required. Must obtain a State of Texas class “B” commercial driver’s license with a passenger (P) endorsement prior to employment.
