The Kindergarten Readiness Camp Counselor provides a safe, fun, and nurturing environment for incoming kindergartners (ages 5–6) participating in a seasonal, afternoon enrichment program at the Stephens Family YMCA. This individual supports young learners through activities designed to promote social-emotional, academic, and physical development in preparation for kindergarten.
Essential Functions
Overall
- Support the mission of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Provide a positive experience to children and families rooted in the YMCA’s core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
Principal Responsibilities
- Supervise and actively engage with a group of children ages 5–6 in a structured camp-style program.
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities that support kindergarten readiness skills including basic academics, socialization, and motor development.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment for all campers.
- Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, following YMCA policies and emergency procedures.
- Develop positive relationships with children, parents/guardians, and fellow staff.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming camp environment.
- Attend all required training and staff meetings.
Schedule
- Camp Dates: June 2nd – August 1st
- Week Off: No camp the week of June 30th – July 4th
- Training: Required training sessions will take place in the last two weeks of May
- Weekly Hours: Summer; Monday-Friday, 12:30PM - 5:30PM
Qualifications and Physical Demands
Qualified applicants must be
- 18 years of age or older
- Enthusiastic about working with children ages 5–6
- Able to lift 60 pounds
- Certified in Adult/Pediatric CPR and AED (or willing to obtain certification within 60 days of employment)
- Patient, responsible, and ready to be a positive role model
