What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Support Specialist position at Steps to Recovery Homes?
Under the general direction of the agency’s Clinical Director, the Peer support specialist is responsible for providing direct client care under the supervision of the Clinical Director. The Peer support Specialist also maintains a safe and efficient working and treatment environment per company policies, procedures, and best practices; communicates effectively with the treatment team to ensure that safe, quality care is provided to all clients.
1. Support clients in meetings their needs as a person in recovery
2. Provides direct support services to include engaging clients in Group Lecture, topics related to 12-step recovery, health and wellness promotion, and crisis management.
3. Mentors clients in areas of recovery that client will need to be able to function in, work, relationships, parenting, and areas that client needs and wants to develop
4. Documents client’s participation and progress in progress notes.
5. Prepares progress notes, event notifications and other documentation regarding clients in accordance with regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures.
6. Performs as a recovery role model for client in early recovery based on their own personal experiences
7. Completes other tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
a. A certification of completing a Peer Support training Program.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND ATTITUDES REQUIRED
1. Knowledge of software programs for personal computer use, especially word processing, email, and spreadsheets.
2. Knowledge and experience in 12 step program and with substance abuse clients.
3. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
4. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, gaining cooperation and resolving conflicts.
5. Ability to plan and organize case workload, manage deadlines of him/herself.
6. Ability to maintain and demonstrate ethical professional standards and demeanor, including the confidentiality of employee and client data, client boundaries, and other sensitive information.
7. Demonstrated competence with, and continued commitment to respect for cultural differences and diversity, protecting client rights.
8. Recognition of the limits of one’s own professional expertise and the willingness to seek supervision and/or support, as needed.
9. Makes clinical and organizational decisions with the clients’ and agency well-being and best interests in mind.
10. Provide treatment that promotes client dignity, independence, individuality, strength, privacy and choice, recognizing the unique needs of the client population served by the agency.
11. Provide the behavioral health services that the agency is authorized to provide and that the staff member is qualified to provide.
12. Recognize obvious symptoms of a mental disorder, personality disorder, or substance abuse.
13. Identify types of medications commonly prescribed for mental disorders, personality disorders and substance abuse, and the common side effects and adverse reactions to medications.
14. Recognize, prevent, and respond to a situation in which the client may be a danger to himself or others, behaves in an aggressive or destructive manner, is experiencing a crisis situation or medical emergency.
15. Recognize and respond to fire, disaster, hazard, and medical emergency: and
16. Has completed all of the requirements above and is documented in application in training including the ability to pass background checks required by Steps to Recovery Homes.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 32 per week
