About the Role
The Behavioral Health Counselor will provide direct support to the West Virginia Army National Guard (WVARNG) Behavioral Health Support (BHS) program, ensuring that Service Members and their Families receive timely and effective mental health care. The Counselor will conduct assessments, provide guidance, and support ongoing care plans while actively collaborating with leadership and community resources.
What you will do
- Provide 24/7/365 access to clinically appropriate intake, assessment, behavioral health screening, and referral services via telephone or in person.
- Support the WVARNG BHS program by delivering information and resources to Service Members and their Families at various scheduled events.
- Assist in coordinating behavioral health services and providing guidance to help Service Members understand available care options.
- Conduct mental status evaluations, identify emotional and behavioral challenges, and develop individualized care plans.
- Provide ongoing case management services to track progress, monitor treatment engagement, and ensure continuity of care.
- Collaborate with social service agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to expand resources for Service Members.
- Deliver periodic updates and reports to WVARNG leadership, ensuring all interventions are documented accurately and securely.
What you will bring
- Master's or Doctorate degree in a clinical or administrative mental health field from an accredited institution.
- Hold a valid WV State License or WV State Certification as a mental health practitioner (e.g., LCSW, LPC, LMFT, Clinical Psychologist).
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical or administrative mental health care experience following the completion of the qualifying degree.
- Experience working with military populations is preferred.
- Ability to practice at the independent level without requiring state-mandated clinical supervision.
- Must possess strong skills in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and mental health support.
