Title:                           Ultrasound Technician

Job Summary

Performs ultrasound imaging studies in accordance with physician orders and departmental guidelines. Performs diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasound waves to examine tissue and body structures. Obtains patient history, explains routine procedures and addresses patient concerns. Responsible for maintaining patient record and files. Performs all ultrasound techniques and examinations for obstetric and gynecological scans.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides information to diagnose patient illnesses by operating ultrasound equipment to produce sonographs.
  • Identifies patient service requirements by establishing a personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
  • Ensures operation of ultrasound equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains ultrasound supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; and verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties, providing explanations of treatment, and answering questions.
  • Prepares patient for ultrasound procedure by positioning patient, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into a specified position, and adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media; and administering first aid and using the emergency cart.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Credentials and Experience

Required

  • Associate degree in Sonography technology from an accredited school or two (2) years of experience in a directly related area
  • Valid state Sonography Technologist license
  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Sonography (S) within
  • One specialty area required (i.e. abdomen, vascular, OBGYN)
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification

 

 

Special Requirements

Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination.  Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time.  Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.  Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
