Job Summary
The VOC Analyst is primarily responsible for preparing and analyzing environmental samples to detect and quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This role involves using advanced analytical techniques, such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), to meet production and quality goals. A small portion (approximately 5%) of the role involves analyzing gasoline range organics (GRO). The analyst ensures data accuracy and adheres to established laboratory procedures while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Primary Analytical Tasks
- VOC Analysis: Conduct VOC detection and quantification using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
- Secondary Analytical Task: Perform GRO analysis in environmental matrices such as soil and water.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage sample workload to meet reporting deadlines.
- Prepare soil, water, and other environmental samples for VOC analysis.
- Perform analyses using GC-MS and follow laboratory SOPs and published methodologies.
- Maintain compliance with quality control standards and ensure accurate, on-time reporting.
- Document all procedures and results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Produce Level IV data reports as required.
- Calibrate and maintain analytical instrumentation, including GC-MS systems.
- Build sequence and batch data to maximize instrument run efficiency.
- Assist in troubleshooting data discrepancies and implementing corrective actions.
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols and maintain an organized workspace.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements
Qualifications
- One year of experience in VOC analysis is preferred.
- B.S. or B.A. degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.
- Familiarity with laboratory methods for VOC preparation and analysis.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated, goal-driven, and outcome-oriented.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods during sample preparation and analysis.
- Manual dexterity for precise handling of samples and laboratory instruments.
- Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds safely.
- Work in cold environments (e.g., sample storage) for short durations.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
