Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham firm with its search for a Senior Tax Manager. The Tax Manager is responsible for managing client tax engagements and delivering high-quality tax services. This includes overseeing the preparation and filing of corporate, individual, and partnership tax returns, providing strategic tax advice, managing a team of tax associates, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations. The Tax Manager will work closely with senior leadership to develop and implement tax strategies and provide guidance to clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance & Planning:
- Lead and manage tax preparation and compliance for clients, including corporations, partnerships, and individuals.
- Review tax returns and ensure they comply with applicable laws and regulations.
- Provide tax planning advice to clients, including strategies to minimize tax liabilities.
- Stay up to date on tax law changes and apply them to client situations.
Client Management:
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as the primary point of contact for tax-related issues.
- Advise clients on tax implications of business decisions, including mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and tax credits.
- Identify opportunities for additional services to clients and help expand the firm’s services.
Team Supervision:
- Supervise, train, and mentor tax associates and seniors, providing feedback and ensuring professional development.
- Review and approve work papers, tax returns, and reports prepared by staff.
- Ensure that work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on time.
Risk Management & Compliance:
- Ensure that clients meet all necessary regulatory filing deadlines and comply with applicable tax laws.
- Identify and resolve complex tax issues, working with clients to address challenges and mitigate risks.
- Manage and communicate the impact of tax audits or tax notices to clients.
Billing & Financial Management:
- Manage engagement budgets, billings, and collections.
- Ensure profitability of tax engagements and adherence to budgeted hours and fees.
Strategic Input:
- Collaborate with partners and senior leadership to develop tax strategies that align with clients’ long-term business goals.
- Participate in internal and client meetings to discuss tax issues and opportunities.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A Master’s in Taxation or other relevant advanced degree is preferred.
- Certifications: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 plus years of public accounting experience, with a focus on tax compliance and planning.
- Experience in managing and reviewing corporate, individual, and partnership tax returns.
- Experience with tax research and providing advisory services.
