Position Summary:
The Director of Manufacturing is a unique position that oversees the largest Cross Laminated Timber Operation in the world. This role will oversee manufacturing in two locations. Core tenants shall include seasoned and strong leadership/motivational skills, well versed in the language of operational excellence and lean manufacturing, as well as technical expertise in the areas of wood manufacturing engineering, quality assurance processes, and capacity planning. The Director of Manufacturing will efficiently plan, produce, and deliver industrial matting and structural CLT projects, as well as develop plans to achieve capacity and improved capabilities.
Essential Functions:
- Planning and tracking of day-to-day operations, owning all master production planning, and materials forecasting to ensure smooth product flow through manufacturing and fabrication, with timely delivery.
- Develop, design, and improve quality controls and systems where appropriate with an emphasis on building quality into processes (quality at the source) and preventing defects getting passes to downstream operations.
- Adhere to the company’s and industry product quality standards including PRG-320.
- Ensure, promote, and adhere to the use existing safety standards while seeking opportunities to continuously improve safety and safeguard employees.
- Evaluate overall performance by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data and metrics.
- Identify areas for process improvement and implement strategies to optimize production workflows, reduce costs, and increase operational efficiency.
- Embrace the core tenants of Lean Manufacturing as the foundation of waste elimination, standard work, visual factory, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and present strategic plans for growth and efficiency and work with senior management to make decisions for operational activities.
- Mentor, manage and develop a high-performing manufacturing team, including hiring, training, and performance management.
- Work within the company procurement processes and coordinate material and resources allocation, while maintaining relationships and agreements with relevant external partners and vendors.
- Own and drive the manufacturing financials and budgets to promote profitability, working closely with senior leadership.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in manufacturing, actively seeking opportunities to leverage new technologies or methodologies to improve manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as sales, project management and finance, and the general industrial manufacturing operations to align operations activities with forecasts, demand planning and budgetary constraints.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, such as operations, design, project management, and logistics, to ensure seamless coordination and communication throughout the manufacturing process.
- Adapt to a fast-paced work environment with strong comprehension to support the supply chain operations.
- Provide effective development to achieve operational expectations.
- All other duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and management abilities, with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team.
- Excellent, formalized, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues, identify root cause, communicate effective solutions, and implement.
- Proven experience in developing and executing production strategies that drive operational excellence and achieve business objectives. Building products, engineered wood products and/or offsite fabrication experience strongly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of production principles, processes, and technologies, including lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, Toyota Production Control and other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong understanding of quality management systems and best practices, such as ISO 9001.
- Proficient in using MS Office, manufacturing software systems and tools, such as ERP, MES and data analytics platforms.
- Ability to adapt to fast-paced and changing environments, and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines while maintaining a positive/sustainable team culture.
- Outstanding interpersonal and oral/written technical communication skills.
- Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Bachelor's degree in operations, supply chain or equivalent required.
- Minimum operations work experience of ten years, majority of experience in engineered wood products preferred.
- Location in Chicago metropolitan area or willingness to relocate, with the ability to commute to the Sterling production facility in Phoenix, IL.
