Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Operative Preparation:
- Prepare and arrange the operating room with sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment specific to cardiovascular procedures.
Intra-Operative Support:
- Pass instruments, sponges, and other supplies to the surgeon during procedures such as bypass surgery, valve replacement, and aortic repair.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure, ensuring the integrity of all instruments and the surgical environment.
Equipment Management:
- Set up and troubleshoot specialized cardiovascular equipment, including intra-aortic balloon pumps, pacemakers, and electrosurgical units.
- Ensure proper calibration and functionality of monitoring devices, such as EKG and blood pressure monitors.
Safety and Infection Control:
- Follow strict aseptic techniques to prevent contamination during the procedure.
- Monitor and address potential breaches in sterile fields and take corrective actions immediately.
- Adhere to infection control protocols to protect both the patient and surgical team.
Specimen Collection and Handling:
- Handle surgical specimens, such as tissue or fluid samples, ensuring proper labeling and delivery to the laboratory for analysis.
Emergency Assistance:
- Respond quickly to intra-operative emergencies, providing instruments or supplies to manage complications.
- Assist the surgical team in implementing life-saving measures, such as resuscitation or rapid transfusion protocols.
Post-Operative Duties:
- Assist in patient transfer from the operating table to the recovery area or ICU, ensuring all monitoring equipment is securely in place.
- Clean and restock the operating room, preparing it for the next procedure.
- Decontaminate and sterilize instruments, following hospital policies and standards.
Documentation and Communication:
- Document the use of supplies, instruments, and any deviations from standard procedures.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team to ensure seamless transitions between stages of the procedure.
Specialized Support:
- Assist during advanced cardiovascular procedures, such as heart transplants, ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation, and thoracic surgeries.
- Support minimally invasive cardiovascular surgeries, such as transcatheter valve repair or replacement.
- Ensure all surgical instruments and devices are sterilized and in proper working condition.
- Verify the availability of specialized equipment, such as heart-lung machines, vascular clamps, and monitoring systems.
- Assist in positioning and prepping patients for surgery, ensuring their comfort and compliance with sterile techniques.
Qualifications:
- Current Surgical Tech Cardio OR certification in California (don’t leave home without it!).
- Hospital experience is a plus, but we’re happy to train enthusiastic Surgical Tech who love to learn.
- Excellent communication skills—extra points if you can throw in a great dad joke!
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (but don’t worry, no capes required).
