Job Description

The Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion supports Stetson University by helping recruit and retain students through the collaborative implementation and day-to-day management of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. In alignment with Stetson's Strategic Priorities, the Assistant Director will create an inclusive campus environment that supports student success and aligns with the university's focus on people, culture, and inclusive excellence. To that end, the Assistant Director oversees the University's WISE Program, an initiative to recruit and retain first generation and underrepresented students, and other belonging, success, and retention initiatives. Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Assistant Director is a key member of the leadership of the office and plays a critical role in educating and supporting Stetson students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Employment duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Serve as the acting supervisor and point of contact for the WISE Program and / or future retention and success initiatives within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion
  • Oversee the marketing, promotion, and recruitment of WISE, as well as the full execution of the program with the Director's approval
  • Implement tracking strategies to assess and monitor the program effectiveness of WISE; provide recommendations for program enhancements
  • Oversee and participate in coordinating WISE programs, including Summer Bridge Day, WISE Up Wednesdays, and Kickback Fridays, and future WISE programming
  • Monitor and report the Peer Mentorship budget under the direct supervision of the Director
  • Recruit and select WISE leaders (mentors) for service under the direct supervision of the Director
  • Recruit and select WISE scholars (mentees) for the WISE program in collaboration with the Director
  • Collaborate with the Director and campus leaders to develop, organize, and execute cultural programming events that foster connections, celebrate diversity, encourage dialogue, and increase understanding among students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Provide professional development related to diversity, inclusion, and equity for student ambassadors, staff, and faculty
  • Assist the Director in developing and facilitating diversity education & training and presentations as needed (e.g., content development, delivery, and occasionally providing consultations to campus constituents on critical / field-specific inquiries / needs)
  • Ensure timely promotion of programs / training / events
  • Develop reports, presentations, promotional materials, newsletters, and other communications in collaboration with the ODI team
  • Participate in division and university committees as assigned (including, but not limited to, those related to student onboarding, persistence and retention, or student success)
  • Assist with supervising the AmeriCorps positions, including training and scheduling
  • Stay informed of changes and developments in the areas of diversity and inclusion and of topical issues that may affect underserved populations
  • Research the latest innovations in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
  • Gather data and make recommendations to the Director regarding programs and initiatives, processes, and procedures
  • Contribute to the advancement of the DEI Strategic Plan goals and objectives
  • Coordinate meetings and events, including internal and external partners and vendors, and key stakeholders
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the Director

Required Skills

  • Excellent organization, analytical, and computer / PC skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and relate with students, parents, scholars, faculty, staff, and others from different social, cultural, and educational backgrounds
  • Knowledge of issues relating to historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, specifically as it pertains to communicating with and training all relevant students, faculty, and advising participants
  • Support the University's Mission and Values in their role
  • Required Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in education, social justice education, student affairs, liberal arts and sciences, or a related field
  • Prior and demonstrated experience in undergraduate academic advising, first-year programs, or with the development and management of student success and retention initiatives in a college or university setting

  • Ideal Candidate Qualifications :

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Previous experience with first-generation student initiatives and peer mentorship programs
  • Work Environment : Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with frequent interruptions and staff and student contact. Some evening and weekend work is required.
