Description
The Swimming Specialist is responsible for providing campers ages three through thirteen how to swim and improve their swimming skills. They will work with children of all skill levels while fostering a positive, fun, and motivating environment that helps swimmers develop confidence and enjoyment in swimming. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for swimming, a love for teaching, and a commitment to promoting water safety. The Swimming Specialist reports to the Aquatics Program Director.
Primary roles include:
Conduct Swimming Lessons
- Plan, organize, and teach swimming lessons according to the level of the participants
- Tailor lessons to meet the needs of individuals or groups
- Provide instruction in basic swimming techniques (e.g., floating, breathing, stroke techniques) and advanced swimming skills
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child development in the primary years
- Collaborate with other Swimming Specialists and the Aquatics Program Director to create consistency in the program
Safety & Supervision
- Ensure the safety of all swimmers by maintaining a vigilant presence in and around the pool area
- Maintain and update a list of campers needing floatation devices
- Enforce pool safety rules and regulations
- Perform basic first aid and CPR if necessary.
Other General Camp Responsibilities
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Participate in the life of the camp and be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Summer Camp Director
- Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness
- Communicate with colleagues about camper issues and needs

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, disposition, and/or ability required to perform essential functions of the job:
- Lifeguard certification is preferred but not required
- Prior experience in teaching swimming, or coaching swimming is preferred
- Strong understanding of swimming techniques, water safety, and aquatic training
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively teach and motivate swimmers
- Ability to demonstrate swimming techniques and remain active in the water for extended periods
- Experience working with children
- Experience with safety and crisis management
- Is committed to being a creative self-starter who brings wisdom, perspective, confidence, and excellent problem-solving skills to the position
- Demonstrates excellent command of a large group of people, children and adults alike, and comfortability and confidence speaking in front of them
- Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills; speaks professionally and thoughtfully to camp families at all times
- Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively bringing a positive attitude and sense of humor even during stressful situations
- Ensures that program participants have a safe and positive camp experience
- Assists in managing crises and unanticipated events that affect camp
- Maintains ongoing evaluation process of camp programs, staff, site and facilities and makes recommendations for improvements
- Assures that the camp philosophy and practices align with our mission and school year values
- Is CPR/ First Aid Certified or completes training before summer camp begins
The Summer Camp Swimming Specialist is a single summer position, with the option thereafter to renew on a year-by-year basis. The individual who assumes this role should have completed a minimum of 1 year in a swim instructor role, or at least 3 total years of teaching experience.
