Job Description

The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science (SES) at Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor position for the fall semester of 2025 (September–December).

The Adjunct will teach ENGR 111, Introduction to Systems Thinking and Sensors in the 2025 Fall semester. (September 2025 – December 2025.) Each section of this course meets two times a week – one 3-hour lab component and one 75-minute lecture section – for the full semester. An additional ~2 hours of course grading and logistical work is expected each week, for a total of approximately 5 - 6 hours per week.

As one of the first courses in the Stevens Design Spine, ENGR 111 is fundamental to the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science’s commitment to instilling a sense of engineering mastery, interdisciplinarity, project management, teamwork, and specific engineering skills required of the modern engineer in its engineering graduates. It also underscores their ability to communicate the technical aspects of a project properly and clearly. The Design Spine is a series of courses that continue through an Engineering student’s senior year.

ENGR 111 is an introductory course for Engineering majors at Stevens and leads up to, among other deliverables, the Edge Computing Challenge hosted during the Winter and the Gallois Autonomous Robot Competition hosted during the Stevens Innovation Expo. This is a project-based class with heavy emphasis on various engineering disciplines, such as CAD, coding, basic circuitry, and technical writing. An excellent candidate is passionate about engineering education and interested in sharing that passion with others. A stellar applicant has received a degree in and has work experience in engineering, though these are not requirements.

This applicant will teach course material at the direction of a full-time faculty course coordinator, in conjunction with other course section instructors and with support from TAs. They are expected to work on-campus with students, with certain tasks such as grading student work and providing feedback on student projects extending throughout the week.

Registration trends may affect a final hiring decision. This is a fixed-term, on-campus assignment for the Fall 2025 semester at Stevens Institute of Technology. Engagement in subsequent academic terms will be considered on a case-by-case, as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate coursework and curriculum with the ENGR 111 course coordinator
  • Meet with their class section twice weekly – once in lab and once in lecture – to effectively cover all syllabus material
  • Facilitate course instruction and evaluate student performance
  • Foster an open, inclusive class atmosphere
  • Participate in active feedback with, to, and from the course coordinator, other course section instructors, and TAs
