POSITION OVERVIEW:
Portage Community School District has an opening for a full-time, year-round Accountant. This is a nonunion, hourly position. Please submit a cover letter and resume when applying. The start date for this position is intended to be mid-February 2025. This position is scheduled for 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday. . This position is eligible for health insurance, health savings account with employer contributions, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, Wisconsin Retirement with employer matching contribution, paid time off, and eleven paid holidays.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position is a part of the business services team and helps to maintain District financial records to assure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations and to prepare and issue accurate and timely financial reports and analysis to District administrators, the Board of Education, and outside agencies; to ensure financial obligations are met; to maintain an internal accounting control system; and to ensure financial transactions are completed according to proper authorization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead the maintenance of a complete and systematic set of records of all financial transactions of the school district within the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) requirements, board policy, and administrative directives.
2. Record detail of all financial transactions in appropriate journals and ledgers from sources such as requisitions, payroll records, invoices, receipts, etc.
3. Prepare financial reports as needed. These include: department level reports, Board of Education reports, Administrative Budget reports, District Audit reports, and DPI reports.
4. Prepare reports, workpapers, schedules, and supporting documents for the annual financial audit and DPI monitoring reviews.
5, Function as a back-up to the Accounts Payable department.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Associates Degree in Accounting, or related field, or equivalent prior accounting experience.
2. Knowledge of and experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
3. Strong computer skills including accounting software, Microsoft Office programs or equivalent, and 10-key data entry.
4. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
5. Ability to work with minimal supervision, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
6 Ability to perform duties of a sensitive and confidential nature.
7 Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
8. Ability to pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
9. Ability to pass a physical examination.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, or related field.
2. Experience with or understanding of Wiconsin Uniform Financial Accounting Requirements (WUFAR) and DPI Financial Reporting (WISEdata Finance, WISEgrants, etc.)
3. Experience in school business operations.
4. Experience using Skyward school financial software.
