Description
This is a temporary position at the District level. The position will run through June 30, 2025. Tentatively, the position will be renewed for the 2025-26 school year.
The Communications Specialist works in collaboration with the Board of Education, District Administrator, Directors, Building Principals, the District’s Athletics Social Media staff member, and Teachers. This position develops, communicates, and implements an annual, comprehensive district communication plan. The Communications Specialist actively seeks and applies ways to promote the district’s mission, vision, and goals. This position acts as a liaison between the District and students, parents, and community.
Essential Functions:

Schedules and implements communication products in the District’s Communications Scheduler in partnership with the District’s Athletics Social Media staff member.
Develops an overall district communication plan in collaboration with the Communications Committee to reach all stakeholders.
Implements and evaluates the effectiveness of various communication tactics.
Anticipates communication issues and is proactive in effectively addressing these issues.
Provides a report to the school board with a "Communication Update" as scheduled on the Board Business Calendar.
Works with the staff and the administrative team to identify and recommend plans for special communications as necessary.
Is responsible for the roll out and monitors the use of the District’s logos and mascot.
Develops a consistent and positive school district presence in the community.
Writes articles and press releases for newspapers/TV/radio.
Uses a multi-media approach to disseminating information.
Monitors news media and creates relationships with reporters and other media representatives.
Maintains and oversees news and special announcements on the District website.
Maintains and oversees the District’s social media presence, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and blogs.
Keeps skills updated through professional development.

Assists with the preparation and presentation of district and/or School Board meetings and reports.

Has the ability to take complex information and translate it into language that is more easily understood by intended audiences.
Understands surveys, can collect data, and use the information gathered to positively impact the communication services delivered to the school district.

Qualification Requirements

Experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or another related field
Related experiences may include special event planning or project management
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and parents
Ability to select and provide access to a wide variety of materials that meet the learning needs of students and staff
Knowledge of civil rights relating to free access to materials and copyright laws
Knowledge of communication planning and implementation
Knowledge of public relations in an educational setting
Knowledge of district technology policies in relation to all media relations including social media
Knowledge of special events planning and promotion
Knowledge of basic marketing principles that can be used to promote the district
Mental Abilities
Requires the ability to read and interpret a variety of documents as well as a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to solve a variety of practical problems with multiple variables where only limited standardization exists. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Requires excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize. Requires numerical aptitude with the ability to determine calculations for spreadsheets; compute rate, ratio, proportions and percent; to draw conclusions; to interpret graphs.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a school environment. This position requires some unscheduled evening work to complete assigned duties, such as photos at district events. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods and talk or hear. The position requires frequent standing and walking; occasional balancing, stopping, kneeling, and light lifting of department materials and equipment; bending and reaching with hands and arms to operate a computer/printer and other office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.
