Description
The Neenah Joint School District is seeking applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Educational Interpreter for Students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deafblind. This position has an anticipated start date of January 21, 2025.
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Under supervision, facilitate all communication, spoken and signed between students with hearing loss, staff (both hearing and loss of hearing) and other students by using a manual code of communication appropriate for learning level of student. Adapt language and materials to meet the needs of students with hearing loss. Tutor academic classes and lessons. Provide information to hearing staff and students to assist in better understanding the needs of students with hearing loss.

COMMON PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, and members of the community in a positive, courteous, and respectful way. Performs duties in a safe and effective manner. Maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality for information. Follows the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the District. Maintains personnel information as needed.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:
Cognitive efforts are required to prioritize multiple competing tasks and interruptions. Must be able to focus on the details of completing tasks accurately and in a timely manner. Must be able to answer inquiries while maintaining confidentiality of information. This position requires individual judgment and initiative.
Qualifications
  • DPI state licensure #O020
  • Interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize various signing systems including, but not limited to American Sign Language (ASL), Manually Coded English, Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), and Finger spelling.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies and building and department procedures. Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of FM systems, cochlear implants, hearing aids and visual aid equipment (closed captioning on TVs for videos required within three months after hire.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum Associate’s degree from an Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP).
  • No experience required; one year of experience preferred in educational interpreting.
  • Certification of completion of Visual Phonics Workshop or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
