Description
The preschool teacher is responsible for the care and education of all children enrolled in the YMCA preschool programs. Teacher must abide within the policies and procedures of the YMCA and State Licensing regulations. The preschool teacher is responsible for implementing the curriculum and providing a safe and healthy learning environment. Typical work schedule for this position will be Monday - Thursday, 8AM - 12PM during the school year and summer preschool programs.
RESPONSIBILTIES :
- Establish and maintain a safe and healthy preschool environment through room arrangement and organization, implement snack and healthy eating, maintain safe equipment, and follow state licensing regulations.
- Enhance physical and intellectual competence by providing a balance between child / teacher initiated activities, quiet / active opportunities, small / large motor play, plan and implement an integrated curriculum and encourage a multi-choice, pressure free, hands-on environment.
- Follow curriculum established by the school district. Promote hands-on activities, self-esteem, cultural diversity and creative expression. Establish a semi-structured setting with smooth transition periods while allowing for flexibility.
- Establish positive and productive relationships with children and families.
- Supervise and encourage the children with positive guidance and techniques.
- Ensure smooth program operation that is purposefully responsive to participant needs.
- Maintain a commitment to professionalism and quality programming for children by promoting the YMCA mission and values.
- Attend staff meeting, staff training, and in-services provided by the YMCA.
- Support and supervise assistants and volunteers assigned to the preschool classroom as well as assist in other child care classrooms as needed.
- Attend to all State Licensing Regulations as well as YMCA Quality Standards. Adhere to OSHA standards and guidelines.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Senior Licensed Child Care Director or CEO.
Requirements
Position requires meeting the qualifications for child care teacher under DCF 251 Licensing Rules for Group Day Care Centers and experience working with children ages' 2&fac12; -5, and their families. A Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood, Associate Degree in Early Childhood or a CDA is preferred. This position requires creativity, flexibility, high energy levels, patience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work as a team. CPR w / AED and First Aid certified is a prerequisite of hire, but will allow 60 days post-hire to obtain.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Applicant must be able to observe children by sight and sound and have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with children and adults. Must be able to lift young children (weighing up to approx. 50 pounds.) Must be able to swim while assisting children. Moving small tables, chairs, and some equipment is necessary. Position also requires that staff person is active during entire class time. This may include : swimming, running, sitting on the floor, and leading large group games. Prior to work, all staff are required to complete a physician-signed health examination and fingerprint background check.
