Job Summary
The Medical Assistant will play a crucial role in providing exceptional patient care and ensuring the smooth operation of the medical practice under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider. The individual will perform in a manner consistent with Stevens Point Orthopedics’ mission, policies, and initiatives while always adhering to the highest standards of patient confidentiality, safety, and professionalism.
Essential Job Functions
- Room patients, gather vitals, and record patient medical, social, family history and chief complaint.
- Communicate clinic delays to front desk staff to manage wait times proactively.
- Aid patients in completing new patient forms, input data into EMR, and send for scanning.
- Manage telephone messages, promptly return patient calls, and accurately document conversations.
- Schedule tests, procedures, rechecks, post-op appointments, and referrals, monitor results.
- Maintain cleanliness in exam rooms, following OSHA standards for contaminated supplies.
- Stock exam and cast rooms with necessary supplies.
- Follow prescription refill protocols and standing orders.
- Initiate orders and occasionally handle prior authorizations for surgeries, injections, and advanced imaging.
- Perform basic wound care, cast removal/application, and brace fittings.
- Assist with in-office procedures, including sterile techniques when required.
- Accurately schedule surgical cases and coordinate all associated aspects if needed.
Additional Job Functions
- Recognize and respond promptly to urgent situations following protocols.
- Perform basic triage following office-specific procedures.
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct consistently.
- Foster effective relationships with physicians, staff, and management.
- Review and update patient records before appointments, including recent lab and image results.
- Assist providers during patient exams, adhering to medical standards and safety protocols. Facilitate provider-patient communication.
- Support patient services with general clerical tasks as directed: scanning, faxing, copying, laundry, prior authorization, medical records, chart preparation, etc.
Job Qualifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire and one of the following:
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification awarded by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant certification from the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license awarded by the State of Wisconsin.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification awarded by the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry (WNAR)
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license
