Responsibilities
- Lay out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications using tools like straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.
- Perform tack-welding of components and assemblies using FCAW, SMAW, or other welding equipment.
- Follow applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC) and perform tack welding in various positions.
- Prepare materials for welding by chipping, peening, and grinding.
- Weld structural materials, occasionally involving uncommon metals, under close tolerances.
- Straighten materials using heat or flame and perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
- Read and interpret blueprints, plan fitting operations, and ensure work conforms to drawings.
- Assist in handling and assembling materials, ensuring proper placement and fastening.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and adhere to safety rules.
- Report equipment malfunctions and perform other tasks as instructed by supervision.
Qualifications
- 5 years of experience as a structural plate fitter or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Capability to weld to AWS D1.5 quality and specifications.
- Ability to pass fracture critical inspections.
- Proficiency in using standard layout instruments like level and transit.
- Working knowledge of blacksmithing procedures.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to read and understand shop fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently.
- Physical ability to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Preferred: Prior bridge work and heavy structural steel experience, and experience in overhead crane operation.
