Fitter Trainer

Essential Functions / Duties

To assure quality machining of metal parts/assemblies in a timely manner, efficient and safe manner to promote and support the success of SMC

• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and references points on material or workpieces as guides
• Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, grinders, and shapers.

· · Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specification, using precision measuring instruments.

• Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks.
• Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
• Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, or surface tables, hand tools and power tools.
• Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

Reports to the department lead

Position is based at Plant 1 in Birmingham, Alabama

Job Requirements Must be able to use proper measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers and be able to read blue prints

Education requirements or equivalent experience:

• High School diploma or GED equivalency
• Work experience with shop math proficiency and strong mechanical aptitude is appreciated; basic math skills required

Additional information : Candidates will be under a 45-90 days evaluation

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, and smell. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
