The Assistant Recreation Director at Stewart Home School will oversee, plan, and implement recreational activities designed to enrich the lives of students with intellectual disabilities. This position ensures that programs promote engagement, socialization, and physical well-being while aligning with the school's mission and student needs. The director will manage daily and weekend recreational schedules, coordinate special events, and foster an inclusive, fun, and safe environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Implementation
- Develop and execute daily, weekend, and special event recreational activities tailored to the needs of students with intellectual disabilities.
- Oversee a variety of activities, including sensory play, arts and crafts, fitness, games, and social events.
- Ensure all programs are accessible, engaging, and aligned with students' abilities and interests.
- Adapt activities to accommodate diverse needs, ensuring inclusivity for all students.
Event Planning & Coordination
- Organize special events such as seasonal celebrations, themed parties, field trips, and school-wide recreational activities.
- Collaborate with other departments to integrate recreation into the overall student experience.
- Manage logistics for off-campus outings, ensuring safety, accessibility, and engagement.
Supervision & Safety
- Maintain a safe and structured environment for all recreational activities.
- Ensure that all staff and volunteers assisting with activities understand safety protocols and best practices.
- Oversee the proper use and maintenance of recreational equipment and spaces.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with school leadership, staff, and families to align recreation programs with students' needs.
- Communicate upcoming events, schedules, and activity details to students, staff, and families.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain records of attendance, participation, and student engagement in activities.
- Order and maintain supplies and equipment needed for activities.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in recreation, special education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities in a recreational or educational setting.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to adapt activities to a wide range of abilities and sensory needs.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Must be at least 21 Years of age, have good verifiable work/character references, and have a clean background and driving record.
