Position Summary
Directs the functions and activities in the Obstetrical Department and Nursery, implements policies, procedures, standards, and regulations for patients, medical staff, and the public. Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed.
Essential Functions
- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel.
- Assist physician with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to obstetrical patient care.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning equipment.
- Inspects area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur.
- Ensures accurate maintenance of patient's medical record and that patient records are treated as confidential information. Adheres to the policies and procedures regarding HIPAA Guidelines.
- Demonstrates proficiency in performance standards and skills required of an Obstetric/Nursery Nurse.
- Demonstrated the ability to competently care for patients of all ages to include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult. Must have knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for patients in this age range, able to assess data and interpret appropriate information relating to their age-specific needs.
- Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed.
- Proper use of safe patient handling devices/equipment is required by all employees involved in lifting/transferring patients who need assistance.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Demonstrates the ability to function as a team leader when O.B. closed.
- Assists attending physician and aids patients and families as needed in times of stress or crisis.
- Directs maintenance of obstetric / nursery facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort and safety of patients and staff.
- Satisfactorily qualifies for the position through an Iowa Criminal History/Dependent Adult Abuse check within the limits of applicable laws.
- Promotes good intra and inter hospital communications and relationships at all times.
